Geez I honestly couldn't even tell you how many I have. Bought another sports coat the other day actually.

A suit everyday in the south is very unnecessary

Three will be good for the beginning. Increase the shirt and tie game immediately add 2 or 3 new suits down the road.

i agree.
The only time i wear suits is for an interview or a wedding, and if it's the summertime, then i'm not wearing a suit unless i know without a doubt that i will never be outside for longer than 10 seconds.

What job requires a suit everyday? Honest question. Not even big firms in NOLA have this requirement anymore.

depends on how mant times a week you change your underwear
different "medium" quality suit for wearing one each day, then 2 very nice good quality suits for after hours and social meetings 7 in total is a conservative estimate a few extras if you dont like running to the cleaners every fewdays

They would have to pay a lot more than that for me to wear a suit on a daily basis. I hate suits so uncomfortable.

Congratulations on your new job.
Three is okay to start, but pretty quickly you're going to need to go up to six. If you only have five, you might get a reputation around the office for having a Monday suit, a Tuesday suit, etc., though that happens rarely and only if the rumor is started by a loudmouth who sees you everyday having lunch in the break room (don't eat in the break room and you'll be safe).
I agree with the poster above who advised against black suits for those in the non-waiter or valet professions. I work at a law firm and none of the guys wear black suits, not even the one outlier who wears brown suits and who we think shops at Burlington Coat Factory.
If you're short on shirts, then wear white shirts and modest ties to start.
Lastly, except for your secretary (if you have one), my bet is that no one will notice your suits ever. At most, you might get a mention about a new tie, but only if it's unusual or a really bright color.

If you're an attorney, it depends on how often you're in court. Some weeks I'm in court almost every day.

Wear the gray and navy for now. Don't wear the black. Add some conservative colored shirts first, so you have 10 or so, and conservative ties. This is your base. Then work up to 5 or so suits.
And spend money on a quality pair of shoes. Black then dark brown.

At that level of career/salary around 5. More so because fewer will wear out faster.
I have about 15 hanging in my closet and was just looking at the Brooks Brothers site for a couple more just because I feel like a couple new suits. I am turning into a suit hoarder kind of.
If you have the money get custom made to order they fit way better.

do you try and coordinate them with your clients' prison coveralls?

I agree with this first sentence. Other than that get brown shoes. Forget black. Way more versatile if you get brown and helps justify spending more money to get a better pair.

But apart from criminal defense, most of us are not. And even then, it isn't a "firm requirement." It's a court requirement. And even then, I'm wearing a sport coat for arraignments and such.

OP, where do you live? I've scored a couple of pairs of shoes for $80 or less from a Johnston and Murphy outlet. In that same outlet mall there's a Brooks Brothers Cole Hahn, Calvin Klein, etc. If you're a single dude or don't have kids $75k is more than enough to go pick up a couple of suits and nice pairs of shoes.
