Me, early 80s, baby cottonmouth, i couldn't take the anti venom, so it ran its course. Wasn't terrible.

Death by snake bite in the US is extremely rare. About 5 deaths a year out of about 8,000 bites.

Coral snakes being the worse for serious injury, but bites are very rare.

Copperhead went after my old lady (my eldest hound rescue)

Took 2 bites to her neck

Final Score:

1 = hound rescue
0 = copperhead

As for humans, if you hang with cajuns and / or hill folk, the correct answer should be zero. They are too smart to get bit!

Anyone know what anti venom actually costs at the hospital?

I only know one person that I can think of. He is a lawyer, but he keeps around 100 rattlesnakes in a building at his house that he milks for the venom and then sells it to an antivenom manufacturer. His hands are all mangled up where he has been bitten several times.

He showed me his process of milking them, but I kept a healthy distance away. LOL. He's already an obviously successful guy professionally, so I asked him why he fools with the snakes. He told me that he loves rattlesnakes first of all, but every time he gets one out and milks it he makes $100. I suppose with 90-100 snakes, that adds up pretty quick.

ETA... This was around 15 years ago. No idea what he may be getting for the venom these days.

Three
And older fellow that moved from the country into 'town' next door to us and was like a grandfather to me. This was in the mid 60's and he had worked in the woods skidding logs with a mule team. Told me once he had been bitten five times.

Other two were guys I worked with. One got hit twice by a cotton mouth while he was way out in the woods on the Calcasieu River and he damn near lost his leg.

The other was pulling weeds in a flower bed and and got popped by a ground rattler. Dude was severe diabetic and had a terrible reaction to the anti-venom. The reaction was way worse than the bite.

Not snakes but brown recluses. Have known two perfectly normal men that simply put their yard shoes on (left in garage)one day and a few days later had their foot or leg from the knee down amputated. So crazy to think about how severe something like that can be.

They didn’t go to the doctor when they noticed/felt something strange over the next day or two? The venom can’t possibly work that fast unless you neglect the bite. Maybe it can.

My cousin was bit by a copperhead about 20 years ago. He reached down to move an old lawnmower and it was underneath it. Got him on the knuckles.

His hand ended up looking like a catcher's mit for about three days.

Fortunately the snake was huge and he didn't get hit with a high dose of venom. His son shot it shortly after that. I wish I knew how to post the Pic here.

Same cousin was recently bit by brown recluse a few weeks ago. His arm looks rotten.

I have actually been bitten by a brown recluse. At least that's what the doctor told me it was when I went in a couple of weeks later. I didn't realize that I had been bitten when it happened. I developed a sore a little smaller than a dime on my leg that was becoming concave and just wouldn't scab over or heal.

The Dr treated it and it finally healed up, but I still have an indented place on my shin 30 odd years later. I've always assumed it was inside my waders and bit me.

I was raised in Louisiana, lived 25 years in Texas, and spent a lot of time in the woods, the river, and the swamps. It is hard to believe, but I only know of one- my youngest brother- who was bitten by a coppermouth. I witnessed another in South Texas, who a rattlesnake tried to bite, but he had snake boots on, and that protected him. I HATE snakes too! I had some close calls: two while riding a bike, one just a week ago!

One of my friends wife got tagged by a moccasin walking down the steps of their lake house. She had to have a lot of anti venom and the bill was huge.

I recently learned that India has over 50k snake bite deaths per year. That was a wild stat to me even knowing they have extremely venomous snakes over there

It happened within a few days. At the point they went to the doctor the only way to stop the spread was to amputate.

I met a girl who was bitten by a copperhead on the foot.

For some reason that foot is still larger than her other one even though it happened a decade ago.

Yes, I visually checked

I also despise snakes. When those news stories say they go up toilets I cringe.

A few things...True or not?

-copper heads are aggressive frickers. that smell like cucumber?

- anti venom for a coral snake bite isnt widely available?

I know Chuck Norris was bitten by a venomous snake, and after three days of excruciating agony, the snake died.

My brother got bit by a timber rattler when he was 10.

My dad was with him. Killed it, and kept it in a jar for years. Freaked me out.

My wife was bitten by a copperhead in her parents' driveway while she was in her early 20's. Walking out to her car in flip flops and it blended in with the gravel. It kinda missed because she only had one puncture wound and a scratch next to it where the other fang didn't go in. No antivenom, but she had swelling and red streaks all the way to her hip.

We and my in-laws all have ranch properties, so there's snakes everywhere. The dogs get bitten by copperheads all the time, and we had a horse get tagged on the nose by a big rattlesnake last summer. It was about 6' long and the horse stayed in an equine clinic for 3 1/2 days. Fun vet bill for that one. Barn cats help a lot but don't get them all.

I got bit by one on my chest when I was a kid. My parents took me to the doctor when it was about the size of a dime, and he said it'll hurt but that it would get better. It got up to about the size of a quarter before it stopped spreading. In my mid-40's now and I also still have the scar.
