We are surrounded by hay fields. My attempts at flower and vegetable gardening have given the voles, moles and mice softer ground to move through. Rabbits are not kept in limits by a red hawk release done two decades ago.

We got to a situation where the cats got too old to hunt aggressively, the rodent population grew, the snake population expanded out of the woods into the gardens. (There is nothing quite like being on your knees, weeding and looking and seeing a blacksnake head coming out of the ground two feet away.)

We now have two young cats who hunt for their dinner and we supplement it (when they are hungry) with cat food.

Out west how are TPTB recommend control of rodents that are potential carriers of Hanta Virus?

In a densely populated neighborhood? 2 maybe

In the country? As many as you want. They keep snakes and rodents at bay

There is one tom cat that roams my neighborhood, takes care of the chipmunks that my idiot neighbors attract with their bird feeders. Don't know who the cat belongs to but am glad he is on patrol.

That's different. My 2 outside cats are out in the sticks and it's great. They do come inside and hang out but go out and hunt rodents and snakes.

In a neighborhood subdivision, they suck.

but I also have ZERO desire to live next door to an informal feline rescue.

Guilty! But my neighbor feeds them as well.

But we have opossums, raccoons, and skunks in the neighborhood.

And all of the cats are rescues. My brother lives across the street and he has some rescuses (his daughter has 3 kittens she trapped) and the neighbor 2 doors down is a vet.

Our cats are cool!

My Lolo is NOT allowed outside...she is a rescue too. Picked her up off the shoulder of I-10 when she was 6 weeks old...she is now 8 years old.

ZERO

And if they show up and attack our birds in our yard, they will be closer to that number.
Legally, of course.

One of our neighbors has two outdoor cats, an indoor and two rabbits indoors…then another neighbor has two outdoor cats. Well that’s great and all, but we feed birds on our back deck and the cats swarm like crazy.

You feed the cats so they won’t eat the birds, now you have cats by the front and back doors begging for food.

I could see having an outdoor cat if you lived on a farm and had a barn…but in a neighborhood an outdoor cat just seems like a burden you are forcing on everyone else.

My answer is 1…if it’s an indoor cat at some part of the day. If you simply leave a bowl of food out you don’t own cats…we all do.

Outdoor cats are the shite as long as they aren't having group sex every Tuesday.

Outdoor cats are a nuisance and should be put down.

They are one of the biggest causes of extinction.

The chipmunks are supposed to be there. The cat isn't.

You'll never stop having outdoor cats in neighborhoods.

I had to change the settings in my Neighborhood app so I would stop seeing lost cat posts.

No.

Euthanizing is the solution.

Wild cats are unbelievably destructive.
