I’m a pure middle class kid. Dad told me he would pay for college if I didn’t have a scholarship, or buy me a car for college if I got a scholarship. This probably helped motivate me to get a scholarship to college (I got a used Nissan Sentra for my efforts, nothing extravagant). Took out student loans for professional school, which was a good investment.

Totally self made. Parents didn't graduate high school and worked hard all their life but never made much and were not able to pay for college. I left at 17 and joined the military. S After serving 4 years started college at the remedial level and graduated in industrial engineering in 5 years while working full time to support myself. I now do very well and have been investing for years so my kids should be left in really good shape. I do struggle with whether I should pay for their way or make them put some skin in the game to understand the value.

Parents could not help. Father passed while I was in high school, Mom did not have the money.
Went to LSU for two years by working summers. Money ran out and I went into the Navy for 4 years. Got out of the Navy and finished my degree in engineering by working nights and weekends and utilizing the GI bill. Took 10 years from start to finish.

I guess that’s me. But I can’t pass it on, failed marriage and no kids. So I’m kinda wondering what do I do now?

I don’t have kids so I guess I’m leaving my thousands to the OT.
My parents gave me $1500 for my first semester of college and I decided to put it into my truck instead(truck nuts) and went offshore at 18. Lifted truck after lifted truck I blew all my money through my 20’s on stupid shite and at 32 I had 35k to my name. That 35k was 28k in 401k and the rest was checking and savings. I made a career change at 32 and took a chance on going to a more commission driven job and it has been the best thing that has ever happened to me career wise.
I look back at all the people telling me to save and max out my retirement when I was younger but those big shiny trucks and other material things put me way behind on retirement.

My parents who were born into money and had college paid for by parents did not decide to invest the same into their four children. Only the youngest went because tops was a thing by then. I put all of my children through college so they won't have to bust arse at two jobs like I did.

I'm self made, grew up poor and had a fear of being that way forever. Paid my own college tuition and went to work the Monday after graduating college. I will be able to retire at 45 unless something bad happens.

Congrats! I highly recommend this. This is the best way to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and socially for life. You will learn lessons you will not learn anywhere else. If you really want to make something out of yourself, there is no better first step.

Not from parents but was damn lucky I grew with guys that became unbelievably wealthy and help me get some of my biggest deals and connections
