I live in Lafayette, I can't imagine my quality of life is much worse here than most of suburbia around the country.
if you are upper middle class.....it isnt. same with a lot of places, but for those that are not....yea lot more opportunity elsewhere. even for most of us who have great jobs...we are prolly leaving some on the table with not moving.
there are exceptions like enginerring or injury lawyer etc.

Not sure about enginerring but I can guarantee you that almost any engineer will make more in Houston.
its pretty close actually if you are in the industrial arena....anything else yea Houston is way better.
in general engineers in the plants or with firms that are serving the plants make a shite ton more than their outside counterparts. So S LA and Houston engineers make much more in general than those in other parts of the country.
example the median salary for a mech eng is 83,500 and the median in chicago is 86,500. most of the ones in the plants are start at or very close to that. in new york its 87,700.
chemical is like 90k in NY, median in the country is 97. most ones in the south are starting in the mid to upper 80s. houston area is like 107 average.

Yeah but outside of oilfield support, I don't see a lot of opportunity in the industrial arena around Lafayette. Of course I'm not really looking now days and I'm probably too expensive and too close to the back end of my career for most things out there now.

xample the median salary for a mech eng is 83,500 and the median in chicago is 86,500.

I did for 7 years of my posting career. Obviously I started out in TX, and now I'm in TN.

I could move somewhere with better schools, but then I would have to give up being close to friends and family. And the school tuition isn't killing me. The biggest drawback to me here is the shite climate, and topography, but that still doesn't really offset being close to friends and family.
I'm fortunate that I can work from home and that my wife has an opportunity here that is as good or better than she would have in other areas. I understand for a lot of people there aren't career opportunities here that can be had elsewhere.
If you're in a situation where your income is proportionally the same as it would be in higher COL areas, a place like Lafayette really isn't a bad place to live and raise a family.
For example, I don't see what living in Texas would offer to offset the benefits that I have living here.

Father (LSU Grad) moved the family out of LA many years ago. I was just a kid. We visited relatives occasionally. I always watched LSU football with him though. Still root for the purple and gold!

Used to be a hell of a lot that did and attended LSU at the time. Now most are older and a lot of us live out of state. I know several posters who aren’t even fans of LSU.

I’ve lived in both Lafayette and Texas suburbia. Lafayette most definitely isn’t bad to raise a family by any means. Lafayette has this small town feel to it. Lots of good local businesses and people support them. Don’t get me started on Reds..I’ve always heard North shore is good but do they have a strong community feel and support their local businesses this way? Or do the Joneses just say frick it and go to Chili’s?

thats median bro
mid career median is only 88,500 for mech.
the engineering salaries in S LA and houston areas freaking blow everywhere else out the water. its why many of us stay.
