Leviticus 19

26“You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. 27You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 28You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD.

It's simply either a desire for attention or a desire to fit in. I was born without them and I'll die without them. I think they're trashy and stupid. I truly think less of people when I learn they have a tattoo. I mean, deep down, why would one get one other than the fact that they have an immature need to either fit in with others who have them or they're just plain fricking dumb.

That shite doesn't look good now and it won't look good in retirement.

Same thoughts on nose, eyebrow, tongue, chin, and cheek piercings.

Now tell me what you think about judgmental pricks...

All I know is in this thread people keep making the mistake that the tattoo bashing includes those from WW2 etc.

Those people have all the reason in the world to be tatted (identifying their remains if tags are removed/lost), and the military is a much different culture for the most part in day-to-day operations than any other industry.

Anyone born in the 70's or later and with no military service yet tatted = 90% chance they are trashy individuals.

If whatever important event you are tatting on your body is that important, then I would think you wouldn't forget that event, unless you fully plan on developing Alzheimer's earlier than most. Then it just seems like you only care about impressing your life on other people. I just dont see the point of taking money and investing it towards something that really isn't going to benefit your health, education, or how well you treat others. Seems like a pointless pursuit when its all said and done.

With that being said, many of us have many pointless pursuits that are not tattoo related, I believe tattooed individuals shouldn't be treated any differently unless they show otherwise with their actions, but sadly in my experience I've always felt an inferiority complex among those sorts.

No, Im not saying all tattooed individuals have an inferiority complex, just my limited experience has made that seem true among those I've been around.

Exactly my point. Why in the frick would she ever NEED to be reminded with a giant fricking stamp on her body? Shouldn't she remember anyways? I mean geez thats a crazy life event and then as a result you become a human notepad? What the frick man?

It's the same with the guy that drives a Lexus and lives in an apartment. Or the people wearing their southern tide or salt life brands. Or the guy that has recently started growing a beard.

Everyone has their own way of seeking attention or trying express themselves. It's all stupid as frick but it's the instant gratification, "look at me" society we have unfortunately built.

You do you, and let them do them.

Eh, those are some of the exceptions to the rule.

Probably 95% of tattoos I've seen suck. For reference I was one of only two or three in my infantry platoon of thirty-five that didn't have one. I loved my soldiers like brothers, but not a few of them were idiots, especially when it came to stuff like that.

Two tattoos that I've seen that were pretty damn cool:

1. My platoon sergeant had the kneeling soldier/shadow/cross and had the name and date of every single one of his friends that been KIA. It's on his shoulder blade, and it is a beautiful piece of art.

2. I know a girl that has a very small (like 14 pt) tattoo across her wrist that is just two words - the last words her mom ever said to her - and can be covered by a watch or band. This girl graduated from one of the best universities in the country, has made money hand over fist working for a private equity firm, owns a $750,000+ condo in Chicago (in her mid-20's), comes from a well-to-do background, etc, etc. It works for her but wouldn't for 95 out of 100 other people.

Depends

I dont trust the people i see around here covered in tattoos. They can do them as long as it doesn't involve trying to rob me.

I have no issue with that, and even if she wasn't from a well-to-do University, and didnt make a lot of money, I wouldnt have an issue.

i certainly think trashy people can have money. Have you seen the Kardashians?

Certainly - and I get exposed to quite a bit of that being around consulting and finance (although Chicago isn't nearly as bad as NYC). People who don't know how to act with money. This particular person I was referencing is quite the opposite, actually, and I have a problem with throwing blankets over things like that, though.

Because she would forget about that if she didn't have a tattoo, right?

How many think Chester here should get off his lazy arse and do some work out in the yard instead of asking dumbass questions about tattoos on the internet?

It seems to me that reflects more upon you and who you associate with and less upon tattoos.

You're the trashy one.

I got one on when I was 19 with my best friend. I got it on my calf bc I knew I was going to need to cover it when I graduated college and got a job in the corporate world.

I started to regret it in my late 20s but then my best friend was killed in a freak accident.

Now it is something that I have to remember him by bc it was something we did together.

Kinda judgmental.

While I don't like the idea of defacing your own body with needles and ink, I realize I'm a product of another generation.

I've also lived long enough to know that what I thought was "cool" when I was in my teens, 20s and 30s, changed as I continued to grow older.

And today I look back and wonder how I could ever have been so passionate about certain things that now look to me to have been so shallow and transitory.

Plus I've also seen what tattoos can evolve into - shapeless blobs of not so pretty color on an older person's eventually sagging, creased, dry and wrinkling skin (which to my own chagrin is inevitable).

So when I see a young attractive woman, or a young man who are choosing full sleeve tattoos, I shake my head. And likewise, for those big, loud tattoos on necks, arms, or backs often exposed by wearing some bridesmaids' backless dresses and evening wear, I wonder what these lovely young people now are going to think of them in 20-30-40 years.

Do I think the people who choose them are weak? No. No more than those who don't. But what I do think is "possible mistake" - one which will reveal itself in full with the passage of some years and the onset of maturity. Of course, by then it is already too late.

Our skin is the only (and best) skin we ever get.

Im sorry but youre going to have to explain this. If I am around one fellow who shows up tatted, is rude to other people, shows no consideration for others okay. Thats only 1 no big deal. Then in a separate incident another tattooed individual STEALS from his own family. Okay thats #2. Then you see the only tattooed individuals you know getting arrested on the regular for drugs and other offenses. How in the frick does that make me trashy? I didnt do shite. Im sorry they give tattoos a bad name. Their meaning in context is different where I live than where you live. Maybe its a reflection of context. Im sorry if you have tattoos and other tattooed individuals do stupid things?

I said it was my experience with who i've been around. I never chose to associate with these people I speak of. I thought i was clear on it being my experience. Obviously the tattoo itself is ink and doesnt actually cause one to commit crimes are act wrecklessly. There is a particularly disposition before acquiring a tattoo it seems amongst those I have interacted with. I do not know who you've interacted with at all, and thats exactly why Im not speaking to that. Again, I did not choose to associate with these people, nor did I provoke them. We're talking 6-8 guys here btw.
