re: How many of you have been called for jury duty and/or served on a jury?

1. Been called for jury duty; if so, how many times?
I've been called 3 times, in each place we've lived - Baton Rouge, Beaumont TX, and Houston TX.

2. Actually served on jury duty; if so, was it a boring or interesting case?
Never served. In Baton Rouge, I was in a "pool" for potential jurors. I sat in the library downtown every day for a week reading and got a free lunch out of it. In Beaumont, I was selected for a civil trial, but they settled right before we were empaneled. In Houston I was interviewed, but made very clear my disgust for the potential case (personal injury attorneys representing a car accident plaintiff) that I don't think either side wanted me on the jury.

3. If you served on a jury during a serious criminal trial, did you fear retribution?
This is a valid concern, but consider the statistics. ("Sauces," if you will :-)) Out of millions of residents, thousands get summons; of the thousands that get summons, hundreds respond, and of the hundreds that respond only 12 would be picked for a high-profile case such as that. Saucistically speaking, the possibility of this is so small as to be infinitesimal, and the court goes to great lengths to protect the integrity and identity of the jurors.

Been called for jury duty many times. Only on a jury once.
DUI case. Car sales manager.
Dude had been home drinking while watching Tennessee basketball game on tv. Gets a booty call from some chick out in the county. Gets pulled over for DUI on the way there.
He refused breath test and refused the blood test so was going to lose his license. He was fighting it.
In the police dashcam the guy couldn't even lean against the car without losing balance and sliding off the edge of the car. Refused to do field sobriety checks.
The only evidence presented was the dashcam video.
Took us less than 10 minutes to reach a verdict.
Edit: It was his 3rd DUI

6 for 6. Worst was a sex abuse of a 5 year old girl. Guilty
Most entertaining was a guy who swore out warrant for drug dealer who took his money and gave him baking soda. Mistrial.

I got selected for the county Grand Jury. It made me believe that every single person in this country should have to serve on a Grand Jury at least once. You learn exactly what is going on around you on a regular basis.
For every messed up story that is reported by the local news, ten stories as bad or worse go unreported. People have no idea how bad it is in their cities.

We ended up deadlocked. The first minute we went back to deliberate a large Black woman said, I don't care what evidence there is... I will never vote to convict a Black person. We sent a note out to judge telling him this and he sent a note back saying basically I DON'T CARE, give us a verdict.
I am not an attorney, but this seems like a prime reason to kick out a juror.

I think an equally interesting thread would be for former ADAs and defense attorneys to give us jury stories and what they look for in potential jurors. I am sure the dumber the better in their eyes.

Does being tried before a jury count here?

First time was for a murder trial and the jury was going to be sequestered. By the time the jury was picked there were only a handful of us left in the jury pool. One of my college roommates was picked and they went straight into sequester! She asked me to go pick up clothes and toiletries for her from her house. They sentenced him to death.
I was picked the second time and it was an extremely snooze worthy traffic accident case. Only lasted a couple of days.
Third time I was called I wasn’t picked because the case was about someone who’d suffered brain damage after being hit by a car as a pedestrian. Something I said about having a neurologically impaired child made one attorney disqualify me. The wife of one of the attorneys was a childhood friend of mine and I thought that’s what would disqualify me.
Fourth time the case was settled while jury selection was going on.

The second time the case was a personal injury case from a wreck. I'm sure I got struck when I raised my hand to the question, "Who here believes it is possible to fake a back injury?". I figured that wouldn't get me too far.
Wait...so they only wanted people on the jury who thought it was impossible to fake an injury?

Called for Jefferson Parish numerous times, only made it to voir dire once, didn't get picked.
Onlu time I got called for Federal Jury Duty in New Orleans...an ole bawette tried to sue J.C. Penny's in Houma for a slip and fall case. Was the foreman. Whole thing lasted 3 days. Interesting time..afterwards had a Q&A session with the judge. I asked why a slip and fall case in Terrebonne wasnt tried there. He replied since J.C. Penny is an out of state corporation, being sued by someone from in state it becomes a federal case.

Been summoned once or twice a year for the past 20 years or so. Actually chosen once. I was the foreman on an assault case. A high school teacher filed charges against a student. Not guilty.

Once. Orleans Parish criminal court is an experience. Wore my most obnoxious blazer and loafers and was the first asked to leave each day.

Several times for local petit as well as federal juries. Interesting each time. Served on a grand jury back in the 80's. Returned true bill on several occasions.
