I was, but I did it for the adventures and camping. I got to Star, but ranks were not my focus. I wish I would have went after my Eagle though. Impressed with those who did.

Same here. I basically got to Star just by getting merit badges at Summer camps for stuff I was already doing. I never took any merit badge classes that I had to do shite outside of normal troop meetings.

We were definitely a high adventure, boy-lead troop. The adults were just there to make sure we didn’t kill each other and to drive us around, but we did all of our own cooking and planned our own activities.

Went to summer camp at El Rancho Cima, Avondale and Camp Daniel Boone.

Were Boy Scouts for the kids who didn’t play sports? Between BREC football starting in 3rd grade and tee ball/American Legion baseball starting in 1st grade...who had time for Boy Scouts. Tended to be the non-athletes from what I recall.

I'm an Eagle Scout. I didn't really want to stay in and finish, but I'm glad I did.

I was, didn't make it to Eagle. I think I was a Star Scout before the troop folded for what was about the 5th time.

The more you accomplish before you get to high school the easier it is to finish.

Scouts is a time commitment but it is still possible to finish even if you play sports. Band kids in high school are just as busy as most sports. Band is year round, from summer practice, to fall football performances, to Christmas concerts to showcases to spring concerts. It never ends.

I was. It was awesome. Me and about 6 or 7 buddies went from Cubs through Eagle together. I can't imagine having not been a Scout.

To echo what the poster before me said, it is much easier to get to Eagle if you hustle when you are younger. I made it at 15. Once you get a license, start chasing girls, playing high school sports... it gets much more difficult.

Same here. I stopped at Life scout like an idiot. I could have probably gotten some good scholarship money for being an Eagle.

Anyone else go to Camp Salmen? I think they call it Camp V-Bar now. It is in Mississippi. I remember having a blast out there for summer camp. They had Black Hawks land in the field one time and that was awesome.

I went all the way to Eagle. I'm ashamed of the organization now.

The national organization itself is what it is. Decide what you want to be and stop catering to every societal norm out there.

It is still a troop based program and if you have good troop leadership it can be very rewarding and it gives you great organizational skills.

The problem with Swamp Base is the heat and mosquitos and terrible summertime weather. Plus, I wouldn't want to be out there with pop up summertime storms rolling through with lightning.

It might be better for a spring time or fall trek.

I think I read something recently about them getting additional funding for Swamp Base

I was 4H.

I couldn't get over the Hitler Youth uniforms.

My son is a star scout. I'm one of the leaders. My other son will be a webelo. I'm one of the leaders.

We do 4 season sports, but scouting is a family priority. The kids love it.

I'm an Eagle Scout. It's amazing to me how many men that are successful in business and in life are Eagles.

Got to go to a national jamboree, camped all over LA and MS, two trips to the Smokies, whitewater rafting in Texas and in NC/TN.

Learned a ton about leadership. Was a Senior Patrol Leader.

Philmont. My troop only went once during my time. Our slot would have required me to miss all of two-a-days my junior year. That wasn't happening. So I never made it to Philmont, and for years all I heard from my troop mates was how awesome it is. To make matters worse, the fourth day of said two-a-days, I tore my ACL.

I was a cub scout, but for only one year I think. The one of the few things I remember doing is going to a USL football game, but it rained so much that the game was canceled because the field flooded. We instead went to the Lafayette Children's Museum and Chuckie Cheese Pizza. There might have been other activities, but that one stands out the most.

My dad has told me the same but probably for different reasons.

He really wanted me to get eagle. But then we went to some event and the camp leader was racist and homophobic at a speech

That really pissed my dad off because his troop in Virginia was full of military brats from around the world. He had Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc all in his troops and he learned a lot about the world from them and he said it made him a much more social person.

After that, he said he didn’t care if I got my Eagle Scout.
