I remember being in 1st grade and sitting in the backseat at a right turn lane. Suddenly my mom starts screaming at us to put on our seatbelts. We all scramble to get them on, 3 seconds later, CRASH. We're rear ended ended from behind by the trailer of an 18 wheeler. He pitches us forward into the car in front of us. He'd been trying hard to slow down, but couldn't. Thankfully he pushed his cab into the ditch when he realized he was about to take out a little car. Cab probably would have killed us.
Definitely was an impetus to start wearing it more regularly, but still probably didn't do it every time I rode till maybe 11 or 12 when the schools started harping on it, mid 80s.
Jesus, that is some scary stuff right there.
Whenever I'm stopped in traffic on the interstate, I always have this fear that someone behind me isn't going to be paying attention and is going to slam into me.
To the OP, I wear a seatbelt 100% of the time. I would never go unbuckled.

What do you mean used to?
Posted on 1/18/16 at 8:16 am to LSUTANGERINE
I still don't use the seat belt feature

Not until I bought my 1st ford in 2009. The damn dinging every 10 seconds will cause you too.

When I drive I only used the waist section. The shoulder piece goes behind my back. Due to a CRT-D pacemaker that sticks out more then a 1/2" that is right under the skin.
If I wore the shoulder section and got in a bad wreck, there would be a good chance I would break the wires which would most likely kill me. I'm paced 100% of the time.
When riding, I ware it normal.

When I started driving in the mid 1950s cars didn't have seat belts. First car equipped with them was the 65 Mustang I bought when I graduated from LSU. It was just lap belts - shoulder belts were unknown then.

Never wore them before the 90s.
Now you can't even warm up the car without that thing beeping in your ear.

I always refused to wear a seat belt until I heard a highway patrolman comment that he had never had to unbuckle a corpse. He didn't mean it as a warning to me, just a comment about a bad accident with (surprising to me) no fatalities.
Also, I had to watch a video of a guy who rolled his pickup and was partially ejected with the truck pinning him. You could see him hitting the lights and wiper controls with his flailing legs in the moments before he died.
If I'm going over 35 mph, I'm wearing a belt.

Born 1961. Never wore them until I was in college. I was a big racing fan and realized those guys wouldn't think of getting into a race car without being strapped in. So I started wearing mine, because I knew I couldn't drive nails compared to those guys.

My first vehicle didn't have a seatbelt, so I used to drive without one.
When I got a vehicle that had one (an '83 Chevy pickup with a straight 6 and three on the tree), I wore it.

This is why I'm a big user of hazard flasher lights. Last vehicle (Hyundai) had the button to turn them on big, center of dash. Stupid Chrysler van hides it under the vent controls so I'm braking hard, fumbling for hazards, and turning on rear defrost all at the same time

About 5 years ago I went to a junk yard and got two seat belts for my dad's birthday. So he could clip them in the buckle and not have to wear the seat belt. He said it was best gift ever.
except
if he got into a wreck,
or got stopped/ticketed for not wearing a belt ,

Always wore them, from childhood thru present.

I actually took the seatbelts out of my first cars. (1960's).

Never did even though I'm old.
Dad made us buckle up as kids back in the 60's. He was military and you couldn't drive on Base without them on. Became a good habit.

also, not crowding the guy ahead
that actually saved me from a rear end collision in the rain one day...I heard the car behind skidding, I let up on the brake enuf, moved forward a few feet to not get hit....kinda made my day...and the other guys too
