usually just get enough stuff to fit a hand basket.

for a cart i need to be getting heavier stuff, not necessarily on item count, but by weight. water jugs, milk, beer require a cart. otherwise i can typically make due with hand basket and carrying paper towels or toilet paper with my free hand

I get a basket based on what I expect to purchase. Occasionally they do not have a large item I went in for so my basket may look like that. Just a thought.
