The idea of travel ball was a pretty good idea at first but now it’s gotten out of control. At first, it was only the best of the best playing and they didn’t play year around like they do now, only spring and summer and then they moved onto football, soccer, or basketball until baseball season.
It got out of control because of parents. Little Jimmy couldn’t make the travel ball team but his dad thought he was good enough so his dad made a travel ball team. Then little Johnny couldn’t make either travel ball team so his dad decided to make one and it goes on and on like that and now it’s very watered down and people are investing thousands of dollars in it and their kids play year around which increases the chances of their kids blowing their arms out at an early age.
They need to limit the amount of travel ball teams per city or something to stop this madness and they need to limit the season to spring and summer only. Until you get to high school, you should play multiple sports and not just one sport all year long, especially when it comes to baseball. Multi sport athletes are better athletes anyways.
Of course they’ll never limit the amount of teams and the seasons because it’s a huge business now

But we don't even do that now with soccer in this country, which is part of the problem
Whats funny is this kid will go through all this and some naturally gifted kid with no professional training will blow right by him.

I’ve been umpiring USSSA travel ball in Louisiana and occasionally in Texas and Alabama, the last 6-7 seasons. It is painful to watch some of those AA teams play. Hell, most AA tournaments I umpire look how rec ball did 10-15 years ago. These parents just want to be able to say to their friends “oh yeah, little Brayden plays travel ball for X team and we have big tournaments every weekend.”

The parents all justify it by saying they are not making little Johnny play, he enjoys it, and can stop anytime he wants to. Guess what, kids try to please their parents, I played 7 years of football as a kid, and literally hated it, I did it because I knew it made my dad happy.

A friend of mine who played in the minor leagues for a few years is making a killing in Florida doing with these “lessons”. Not sure if he disclosed that at 5’11”, he could dunk better than all the 6’3” plus guys. He never had private lessons and played multiple sports in high school.

Another big problem. Travel ball is the only league where there is talent. City ball is basically rec ball now. I remember the times when really good ballplayers played city ball and couldn’t wait for allstars during the summer. Then they all ended up playing for their high school and they were good. The thing is that having a strong city or rec league really helps your local high schools. Not the case anymore because so many kids that play for their high schools are coming in as freshman and almost all of them played for different travel ball teams so they don’t have the team chemistry that you would of had if they all played for their local city or rec league

$90 for league ball includes uniform that plays on tues/thurs at home.
$100 for uniforms and $10-15 per weekend tournament on a team we play on at our beach house. Dont practice with the weekend team, just play.
12-15 league games and 6-8 tournaments. The day he says he is done, we walk. He loves it and is a solid player, but no superstar. We play but im not drinking the koolaid.

Absolutely retarded, for the parents and the kids. Its supposed to be fun.
Might be worth noting that the video game industry in the U.S. is about a 25 billion dollar industry give or take (according to 2017 data I just googled so likely a little larger now)

I’m not sure if a league will even exist this year for middle school aged kids in BR.. For years my oldest has picked up a school ball team that played in a league in west Baton Rouge.. This year they said they had enough teams and didn’t have room for teams east of the river.. It’s a well run school Ball league that my eldest loves playing in because it was straight fun with friends..

The worst offender of this IMG Academy.
$75k+ for boarding school so your kid can "play with elite athletes"
Just because you pay that crazy amount and your kid attends, I can almost guarantee you that they will not get a D1 or higher end scholarship in the sports 9/10.
IMG Academy sells their school on all of the athletes you see getting recruited in football, basketball, etc., but those kids were actually recruited by IMG Academy and are on scholarship there.
So IMG Academy just banks off the dumbass parents that can afford the $75k + tuition and boarding for their kid to just waste his/her life playing a sport they will almost certainly never making a living at.
