How has LA not yet fixed this unemployment issue?

I am getting real tired of hearing about the following situations.
John Doe was making $1,000 per week before Corona, his hours are cut from 40 to 16 per week. He is now making $400 per week. Because his $400 in weekly earnings is more than $247 per week, he is ineligible for any unemployment assistance. He gets $400 per week.
Jim Smith was making $1,000 per week before Corona. His hours were cut from 40 to 8 per week. He is now making $200 per week. He will get $47 in LA unemployment, PLUS he will get the entire $600 a week in federal unemployment benefits, so he will now get $847/week.
I can understand that mistakes may have been made in the initial rush to help people, but the fact that is still happening, and no attempt has been made to change the law to fix it, is disturbing.

Don’t forget the person who was making $800 before, but now makes $1200 in unemployment, so when a business tried to hire them back at $800, they said f$&k you!

Is this correct? The $600 is completely separate from state benefits and applies to anyone who lost work or has reduced hours.

Why did you cut off "then they lose their unemployment benefits for turning down gainful employment"?
You have to show proof that you're attempting to get a job, and they will verify it with the companies. You don't get to turn down jobs and keep getting money.

Not in Louisiana. The secretary of LWC has said on many occasions that in order to be eligible for ANY benefits, you have to earn less than $247 per week. You aren't allowed in the pay claim system if you make $248 per week.
If you make less than $247 a week, you make it to the pay claim system, and get whatever you would normally get, plus $600.

People are quitting their jobs and filing for unemployment and they are getting it. Not suppose to but the govt isn’t refusing anyone right now.

I don’t know. Maybe they stopped paying state employees, or they are to busy picking up trash on the side of the highway. Just taking jab at all the stop paying state employee people.
I think the problem is they way the system automatically processes things. It is old, but even so when writing software that complicated you can plan on some odd changes, but not so much ones that completely changes the logic like some of these “temporary” rules have. Even so, you usually have more than a month or two to plan and make those kind of major changes.

I think you have to be eleigable in your state before getting any fed help.

How does the state dictate who gets the federal payment? The state can't just ignore the provisions of the Bill.

Yeah, this..
If you're eligible for just $1 of unemployment it makes the fed $600 available.. At least that's the way I read it.

Friend is in this exact situation. Works one day a week and makes $300. No unemployment. If he worked zero he would make $850

I think you answered your own question.
In order to receive federal Pandemic Unemployment Benefits, you have to be eligible to receive state unemployment benefits. If you are ineligible for state unemployment benefits, you will not receive the pandemic ones. The two are tied together in LA.
That's the problem. It should not be that way.

There are plenty of people who are getting maximum unemployment and taking big losses. If you make more than $38k a year in LA unemployment isn’t overpaying you.
