Depends on how much money you're willing to part with.

Catholic Church does not make it easy.
But it can be done.

I'm Catholic and this came up yesterday in casual conversation with some coworkers. I'm divorced and it never occurred to me that I couldn't have Communion unless I had my marriage annulled by the Church.

Oh, well...

Willingly forgoing a rich single life to take on debt with a female and reproduce to start a family bringing on more stress and debt.

I'm looking forward to it for some reason.

Anyone know what an annulment costs?

The more you "donate" the faster and easier it will be...

Took almost two years for mine to go thru the process, being the poor bastard that I am.

Friend of mine submitted all his info well after I did, along with a $500 "donation" and received his in 3 months...

I think I donated the minimum required and if I recall it was somewhere between $100-$200. (This was over 10 years ago so I don't remember).

It's a royal pain in the dick! Annulments aren't based upon what went wrong with the marriage. They're more concerned with you and your ex's upbringings and your states of mind going into the marriage and whether or not either or both of you were in the correct frame of mind to accept God into your marriage when you made your vows. (Catholic rationale, I know )

The questionnaire will ask you a shite ton of questions about your past and want to know all you know about your ex's past. Prepare for many old feeling and experiences to be drug up to the surface.

The local diocesan tribunal can annul a marriage if they find evidence that the marriage was invalid for some reason.

This is true, but the process isn't finished and the annulment won't be final until it's ratified by a 2nd tribunal from another region. Mine was randomly sent to the Baltimore tribunal and it took forever for them to do their part and ratify it.

I guess it all hinges upon how busy your local tribunal and the ratifying tribunal is...

I'm divorced and remarried, neither took place in a church. I am catholic and I do take communion. I believe our faults are forgiven if we acknowledge them and ask for forgiveness.

She may agree to say that she isn't Catholic and it should be nullified but I seriously doubt she admits what she did and makes it an easy case.

Again, it's not about what happened during the marriage. Granted they will look down upon infidelity and other major sins committed by either spouse but they are more concerned with what frame of mind both of you were in leading up to the marriage.

I've been to confession and taken communion several times following the divorce, and I agree. I think if I pray directly to God, and truly mean it, he will grant forgiveness.

I'm legally divorced. This is about the view from the Church's perspective.

It's not a hard concept.

Eyes of man, he's divorced.

Eyes of God, whoa hey man what happened to those vows?

It used to be used as a way to end marriages that no issue was coming from. Because the whole fruitful and multiply thing kept stability (in theory) when you had plenty of princes and princesses to trade around.

It also gave the papacy a leg up on the royals.

So it really had some legitimate uses at one point. Now it's just tradition. Sometimes expensive tradition.

Here's what you do, save money and time by not going for the annulment. Marry the new girl without a church wedding. If you need communion or reconciliation and your parish won't serve, go to a different one.

You already married a heathen before, heathen.

Plus if you get divorced in Catholic church you aren't supposed to take the Eucharist anymore. Yet people do. I see you Mrs. Brown and yes you are going to Purgatory for that.

A civil divorce is permissible. You just need an annulment to remarry.
