Have had a few job offers to move out of state (all between 6-9 hours away from current city). The jobs are with great companies, great salaries, bonuses, benefits, etc.

The drawback is all of our family is here. Our kids have all the grandparents here, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. All of our friends are here.

We move away, we lose all of that.

Any of you baws ever made a move like that? Any other pros and cons?

Take the one with the best schools.

If the move was a net improvement for the family, I'd move anywhere.

Hell, my wife and I have toyed with the idea of moving to Abu Dhabi with our 1.5 y/o for a few years on contract

Do you, though?

With things like phones, Skype, FaceTime, and airplanes, it's not like you completely lose touch with family if you don't want to.

Sure, you don't see them every day, but that's not always a bad thing.

Yes, moved about 1,300 miles from home. Though in my case, no kids involved, which of course is a big difference.

Pros: Better quality of life, meeting new people, experiencing new things, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, being able to travel internationally much easier

Cons: Missing home LSU games

If the money is right, there are few places I would not go.

How old are your kids?

6-9 hours isn't that far. That is an easy day trip for family to come visit. If everything else is positive, I say go for it.

I'd move in a heartbeat. Not just anywhere - it would of course have to be a city I like. But I hardly see extended family once a year on Christmas as it is, so that means nothing to me. My parents are great, but nothing a phone call a few times a week can't take care of.

The caveat is that I don't have children, which makes me quite different from your situation.

Hard to know if you really like a place till you've spent an extended period of time there.

Quality of Living vs Quality of Life

That's what my dad has always told me to think about when considering new jobs in different areas.
Argument is getting paid more and having a better house/financial security? Or being content with the culture and people currently in your life.

One of the places i received an offer from was a top 10 city to move to in the US based on air quality, schools, jobs, overall economy, low crime rates, traffic, etc.

It is a huge factor since we live in Baton Rouge, the butt follicle of Louisiana.

Take the job so you can afford private piano and foreign language classes for your kids. Otherwise, they’ll be raised by technology and forced into a life of giving hand jobs under a bridge for crack.

My wife and I moved from Birmingham to Champaign because of better jobs. Haven’t regretted it once.

We had two toddlers at the time. Similar ages as yours.

Having my daughter grow up around my parents and 1 grandparent has been invaluable to her. They are the main reason that we've stayed in LA so far.

My wife's family is 6 hrs away and she considers that close enough

This. Also, available nonstop flights back home are a big plus.

Moved ten hours away to take the job I wanted. Eventually got back to the area.

80 miles.

Wouldn't leave Southeast Ak for any job. The quality of life here means far more than money or career.

I'm now single, young, and have virtually no debt and few possessions. Distance isn't an issue. The only question would be is the destination some place I would enjoy living in. It really wouldn't take much. Granted, offer me a job in Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, etc, that job better pay out the arse and have a ton of time off because those winters are a hard sell. On the other hand, a decent job that would afford me an ok 1br apt in a safe-ish neighborhood within 20 minutes of my work place on the west coast and I'm on the next flight out.

Bland Houston suburb is a tougher sell than Nashville. Birmingham would be a tougher sell than Denver. However, I'm pretty desperate for a job right now that will get me out of living with my parents, so I'd probably jump at anything right now.

If it just affords a no-frills apartment, I'd take damn near any job between New Orleans, Lafayette, Mandeville, and St. Francisville/New Roads right now.
