This isn't about just solving sinple problems. It's about developing critical thinking skills to succeed when the math gets more difficult.

You don't get what the big deal with the CC math is because you aren't in your 40's spending 2 hours trying to help a 3rd grader with math homework every night.

This is my fight as well with my fifth grader. The way they are teaching it seems very unnecessary with all these extra steps.

So funny and true. My wife can't do it AT ALL and it takes me reading about 5 pages back in his book to make sure I'm not sending him back to school like a dunce with wrong answers.

That's if they even allow them to bring a book home. Most of the time what we get are xerox pages of the homework assignments being sent home.

When does math get more difficult?

At no point during high school do you need critical thinking to complete math problems.

Even if you take calculus, do you really need to understand how derivatives work? To me, taking the derivative of 4x^2 is no more difficult than 2+2. It's simple memorization. But we learn one of those in 1st grade and the other in college. This is an example of math getting more difficult, and it just simply isn't, at least not to me.

I'm enjoying the parents getting mad on FB over this.... yes it is hard for adults to understand but not for kids who are growing up with it now. Many schools offer Common Core weekends to help parents understand but many just don't go and then bitch on fb

If you have 58 of something, and you take away 27 of them, you are left with 31 of them. Why do you need to got through all of the other steps to do this?

If they are teaching subtraction then why the frick are we adding?

Again, not here to say this method is better. But, from someone who figured this out from two equations in memes and nothing else, if you don't understand the math behind it then you just don't get math.

I understand the logic behind but I think it over complicates something simple. Simple adding and subtraction has been taught the same way forever, why change it just for the sake of changing it?

This method just used 4 separate equations to do something that could/should be done in 2 maximum and using 2 actually makes it much simpler.

Are you a parent trying to teach your children these methods?

as i understand it, the "theory" behind this shite is that addition is easier so doing 4 additions, while longer, is effectively easier. of course, once you master long subtraction, this advantage disappears. but yeah, frick the curriculums that common core is causing to be spit out.

Most adults will admit that they are weak in math.

So it seems logical that the way most of us learned math isn't that great. Or even good?

Like the OP said, if the samples given don't make sense, there's a good chance that we, as a whole, don't understand math very well, based upon the way we learned it.

But hard to give up something that we barely understand.

Nope but I learned them fairly easy, many parents if they are willing to take the time and expand their learning can learn them as well. The issue is most parents believe Common Core is evil and that it is only harder.

Yes 4-2 = 2 is simple based on the way we learned
However, in a few years when kids are older this new way will be simple and they will look at their parents and wonder what the issue is. It really doesn't take much to learn the new method, just parents refuse to learn and believe the old method is easier and thus better.

I mean this is America so easy = great, fast = best....

can someone explain the thought process involved in the sample proble in the op? I get that you round 27 to 30, but wtf is the rest?

True. Most people are getting confused between common core and eureka math. Common core is the standards and Eureka math is the process. People should be pissed with Eureka.

Most adults and their children are weak at math because they lack the cognitive ability to understand it. The intelligent have been learning math for thousands of years using a variety of methods.
