My dog is awesome. I punish her by wagging my finger at her sternly, then giving her scritches, a treat and go chase some squirrels.

Everyone thinks their dog is the best dog, and none of them are wrong.

My dogs were trained well enough that they know when theyve done wrong to where I dont have to punish them anymore other than showing them what they did and yelling at them. Since they were pups if they make a mistake in the house they get under and hide underneath the couch.

Mine would always help me with garage projects, which primarily consisted of her snatching the directions and running away with them so I'd chase her.
Then, she'd rip them to shreds.

Joke's on her. I'm a man, so "directions"...

This works for me as well. I make him look me in the eyes when doing it. Dogs will try to avoid eye contact when they've fricked up.

My grandparents would be astounded at how people treat dogs now. They wouldn’t allow any dogs in the house, for starters. That changed with my parents, and now it’s officially over the top.

Nowadays, pampering your dog is a multi billion dollar industry.

Honestly have not had to even raise my voice at my chocolate lab. Even as a little puppy once you told him no, he stopped whatever he was doing and never did it again.

Punishment doesn't work on dogs unless you catch them in the act, then it sort of works.

tru dat - If I am witting arm's reach, I'll swat him on the arse and yell "NO!!"

if not within reach, I just yet NO!!!

but it is not that effective - I think you'd have to introduce them to a situation and continue the exercise with follow up.

Trying to do it in the rare instances you 'catch them in the act' is not permanent.

Most of the time I just re-inforce good behavior.

In the words of Ceasar Milan 'the dog whisperer'
"There is no such thing as a bad dog. There are only bad dog owners."

Of course you do. Between saving a human life and saving your dog’s life, you would choose your dog. I already knew that about you. Are you going to me the sky is blue, too? You serve your animal, your animal doesn’t serve you. You are part of the post-Christian society of America where animals are meant to be served by humans. Some are in denial when presented with that, you are not, which is positive for you.

Hey, Kentucky Steve, are you also a twice-wounded Marine combat veteran of Vietnam? I didn’t think so.

I’m hardly a nerd. Just like good movies and good dogs.

And, to all, I never struck one of my dogs nor crated them as punishment. Also have taken them through obedience training. I know and understand the positive reinforcement philosophies.

But sometimes discipline is required.

By the way, I did catch her in the act. How else would I have wound up chasing her around the den with the case in her mouth.
