I make my own fire starters out of wood shavings from my jointer and beeswax. I put the shavings in silicone ice trays and pour the wax over the them. One will burn for around 10-15 minutes.

Life hack:
Have a Ziploc bag next to the dryer and collect the lint in it. Use the lint as starter. It doesn’t take much.

Dump 3/4 gallon of gas on it and use the rest to make a trail from the kitchen. Light the trail.

I have a gas starter. It's almost cheating.
It is.
The house I grew up didn’t have a gas starter fireplace. Actually didn’t have any central a/c or heat. We had 2 floor furnaces and the fireplace.
We used newspaper and usually had those starter log things, but always kept a little stack of super dry wood from the previous year for when we were in a pinch.
I actually don’t miss much about my teens, but I do miss cold winter days when nothing was going on at the farm and me, dad, and my brother would be hunting morning and afternoons, then just watching football or the hunting channel and keeping the fire going and hanging out with each other.
Floor furnaces are the bomb by the way. Hang your clothes up over them early in the morning while in the shower and get out to put warm clothes on before heading out.

Gas, newspaper, and matches.

I’m good friends with the manager of the Royal Oak plant in B’ham so I get all the free starter logs I’d ever need.

Pine cones and move the splintered side of wood facing down. Pines cones are the best free fire starter I have ever found.
Pine knots are too difficult to find. I can walk in my back yard and collect all the fire starter I need for a month in about 5 minutes.

Duh it’s plastic plastic is petroleum it burns nicely. You could heat your home with your plastic waste and be more environmentally friendly than what we do with plastic

With the gas starter.

Lighter pine (pine knot)

Wax paper. It’s basically oil in paper form. It’s the one camping trick I have up my sleeve. Bring a bunch of folded up wax paper. Takes up no space, weighs nothing, doesn’t get wet, starts a fire every damn time.
But in my actual fireplace I use the gas starter because I’m not poor.

Put some lump charcoal in and light it with wax wood wool. Then toss some logs on and bobs your uncle.
