I've got a 1 yr old, and we're looking to get him into pre-school in 2019. Where I live, there are waiting lists for pre-schools, so I'm looking to sign him up now.

Beyond that is elementary school in a few years. I know which public school zone we're in for elementary, but the school is sketchy and I'm looking at the possibility of private schools (e.g. Catholic, or non-religious).

I have no idea where to go to research which schools are best. There are a stupid number of different websites, and they're all over the place in terms of rankings and full data (many schools I know about are totally missing from some sites). We just moved here, so we don't know many people in the area to consult.

Is there a go-to website for this sort of thing? What's the best approach to finding the right elementary school for my kid(s)?

Their bumper sticker to go along with my 30-A sticker on the back window of my 2018 Yukon that’s financed for 85 months at $900 per month.

Send him to the "sketchy" school for a few years. Let him pick up some street smarts then start worrying about the quality of the school when he gets to about the 5th grade.

What state are you in? You can always look up their state test scores

Rank by test score.

You can also rank by free student lunches.

You can also see demographics.

But with the first two, you won't need to see the demographics.

ETA- Don't use the service used by Zillow or the real estate websites. That service uses racism of low expectations. If a school has average test scores but mostly minority students, they'll rate them higher, as if it is one of the best in the state.

Schooldigger lets you see the raw data and rankings.

Education is a lot like sports. Sure, you don't want your kid to be with a coach who is actively making him worse, but let's be honest the stars will stand out on their own.

Find a school thats convenient and relatively affordable for you and that's in the top 25% and move on. Your kid will be fine. No one's life direction was set in place based on the pre-school they attended.

My kid's school gets an A score but a D for diversity

Easier said than done. Once you get into the top 33%, the real estate starts to soar.

Unfortunately, this is your sign. If it's full of affluent white kids, it's going to be high on the rating list.

For example, in Georgia, I know at least the top 4 or 5 have this in common. Probably true of more.

Oconee County is right next to Clarke County (Athens, GA). Oconee is ranked #2 in the state out of 174 districts. Clarke is ranked #124. What do you think the demographics look like?

They all say they have waiting lists. That way they can meet you and say, yep family full of tards...you're added to our list. If you are the right fit, they will find the room.
