You could try setting an alarm for when you want to stop reading... say 9pm. Then, do something simple like putting a rubberband around your phone or putting a postit note on your screen to act as a reminder to not pick it up again for reading/scrolling after that time.

Otherwise, you'd just need to have a replacement activity ready like others have suggested... reading a book, meditation, prayer, doing a chore, etc.

Put the phone down and don't pick it up again?

Find a replacement behavior that you can chain to going to bed. And put the phone far enough away from the bed so you won’t grab it once you’re in the bed (this works for getting out of bed in the AM as well).

Reading an actual book is probably #1 there.

I put on a podcast about history and usually fall asleep within the first 10 minutes

This happens to me too, and I'm really interested in it. I end up having to rewatch the part I lost consciousness on the next night. Process repeats.

Lol yeah, that’s what ends up happening to me too. I’ve been trying to finish the hardcore history episode about Caesar’s war in Gaul for a couple of months now

Glue your charge port shut. That way you have to use a wireless pad and if you fall asleep without the phone on the pad, your alarm may not go off or best case you deal with low charge all day. You must introduce risk/reward.

Use do not disturb and the "wind down" function on iPhone. When I see the "Wind Down" alert, it means I have 15 minutes left, and I stop using apps that will wind up my brain (no poli board or OT.)

For those who have done it how did you break this scrolling habit before you go to sleep?

Put your charger on the other side of the room. Put phone on charger. Sleep. Or read a physical book.

Put it on a table that you need to get up and walk to and let it charge on it. Not next to the bed. Works for me.

I'm an adult with self control, so I've never had this issue.

Typical weeknight... At 8 p.m., I have a small THC gummy and a 400 mg gabapentin. I have Williis-Ekbom disease (Restless Leg Syndrome), so I need my meds to actually sleep. I put my phone on a dock in my (home) office at 9 p.m.. Kids are put to bed. The wife and I listen to quiet music in the living room. If I am on a device after 9, it is my laptop with "night light" on. By 10 p.m., I am in bed with the Echo playing Brownian noise. Echo alarm goes off at 5 a.m.

The bed is for 2 things.

Those are the only 2 things I do in bed ever.

Makes it much easier to fall asleep.

For the last 5 years or so, I'll get in bed, put in just my right side ear bud, and I'll watch a few youtube videos til I get sleepy enough to fall asleep. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour.

Not sure that I can hop in bed and go straight to sleep anymore.. feels off now.

I like this idea. Put the phone away and read a minimal of 10 pages every night. That would be a lot of books for one year.

I did this years ago. My problem was I would be a little too sleepy I guess, but I would always not remember everything I read the night before...

I like to keep my phone on my nightstand. I'm technically a member of our company's emergency response team, so there's that.. and also in case of any family emergency in the middle of the night.

My folks are over 80. Couldn't imagine something happening and they not able to reach me for 8 hours overnight.
