Is throwing them in the dishwasher still the go to method?

Soak in soapy water then scrub with rag

Soak/air dry, but after wearing them a good bit, nothing can remove the stank, so they have to be retired.

I don’t. It’s a baseball cap.

My favorite cap still has mud from my uncle's high school lacrosse years

If the sticker comes off just go take a sticker off of another hat next time you’re at the mall.

My wife throws them in the washing washing machine if she spots one laying around and can smell it from a distance.
Is the dishwater supposed to be superior?

Not often, and dishwasher with air dry.
I recently had to retire the LSU cap I bought as a student around 1990. Wool, fitted, and had been through about 28 years with me.
The last dishwasher cycle finally wore through in a couple spots.
