Let me know when a man gives birth and I'll answer this question.

Honestly, this makes sense to me. 3 months is 1/4 of a year. If you can be gone and someone else is doing your work, then your work isn't needed.

Correct. Paternity leave is making men expendable and they don't even know it.

Who gives a shite? You think they aren't thinking about you while you sit her and post nonsense during the work day all day?

This fascination with being mad at people using leave that is part of their compensation package is just bizarre. I a thread full of manly men that would never miss work, yall sure do seem like women worrying about what others are doing

I took off enough time to feel like my wife could handle it from there. Still wish I woulda had more time off to watch them grow up. Take as much time as permitted OP, and anyone that gives you shite over it is just jealous.

Got a week paid for my first kid/took week unpaid and two weeks paid for second.

Now my company offers 6 weeks paid leave for paternity leave. Management can cap the continuous use of paid leave at 4 weeks. So basically new dads get 4 weeks paid and 2 floating weeks to use within 6 months after that.

Took 5 days off work and my dad made fun of me sadly.

Stayed home longer with the other kids. I really wish I would have had more time.

The companies I worked for when I had my kids offered anywhere from three weeks to three months.

I’ve had employees take multiple weeks which, barring significant medical issues with wife or baby, seems ridiculous.

Didn’t exist when my kids were born. I could see it being helpful for couples that don’t live near family but my mother in law and mom took turns staying with us so I wasn’t needed.

And work will never come before family

Hell, I don’t think work is in the top 10 most important things in my life

Congratulations.

Can't speak for myself but when we adopted our daughter (she was 13 days old) my wife's employer (she is the office manager for a locally owned pest control company) gave her a full month off and that didn't include the vacation that we had previously scheduled to Colorado/Wyoming that we used to take a crash course in parenting at home.

is that mental state improved as you sit at home making yourself more unnecessary at your job? seems like it could result in exactly what you're afraid of. I guess it depends on the profession

I would wager it's different for everybody, just like life in general is. Do what's best for you and your family. In my case, I didn't have the option. I own my company. Even if I'm at home, I'm still on the clock.

Not sure about you but my mental state is 100x better when I spend time with my wife and kids vs coworkers and clients.

So you as a manager knowingly approved 3 months of leave for a worker with no plan on how to deal with it (don't tell me you didn't have warning, the baby didn't just appear), and you think he's the problem?

FMLA

I had a guy walk in a day before and tell me ha was taking paternity leave.
Left everyone hanging. Don't assume some people aren’t pieces of shite.

Pre FMLA, I had a secretary take paternity leave with no intention of coming back. She then sued us when we hired another person. My mistake was paying her for two additional months out of kindness.

My company has 90 day paternity leave, but I only took one week off.

Unless I turn off my cell phone, I can’t get away from work.

I’d just communicate to your partner that you might need to be flexible for the next month or so. Tell him that you will keep your phone on and answer emails, but you might be out of the office some

It's one thing to argue whether it should or should not exist.

It is a totally different thing to suggest that if someone has it as a paid benefit that they should not use it. That would be the same as saying you got pissed they contributed to their 401k up to the company match.
