I usually keep mine at 76. It's bearable right now but you can't leave open windows in BR at night. Wake up and your stuff is gone.
I lived in Monterey California and had no central air or heat just a fire place. There you don't need it. I can't go July and August w/o AC. Not my fat arse now

Dude, when did the unit quit working? Option 5, spend 2,000 and let somebody else worry about it. Capacitor could be the reason the fan motor isn’t working. Take a pic of the model and serial number on the data plate.

Sidenote: my AC guy just called and said he can't make it tomorrow mooning and coming down to fix it tonight at 8pm. God Bless this saintly angel

Our daylight basement only gets to about 80 degrees in the hottest part of the summer.
I imagine a fully enclosed and underground basement is even cooler.
We're in central Alabama.
For comparitive purposes, the rest of the house will get to damn near 100 without the AC on in the summer

It had never existed so there was nothing to miss.

What was the average surviving age?

In Louisiana? Not even a window unit?
My grand parents, and tons of people I knew around Lafayette and Crowley had no AC well into the 1970s.

You'd be surprised how much this will keep you cool...run ceiling fans (make sure they are turning the proper direction) and also have this blowing towards you at night when in bed...

The average life expectancy in the 1800s was about 40.
There were plenty of old people in the 1800s, 70s, 80s, were very common, the average life expectancy was so low because of infant mortality, accidents, and things like common infections killing people while they were young. If those three things didn’t take you out when you were young you could live a long time

That’s what I did three years ago in anticipation of a move. It didn’t happen and now I’m back where I started.

My high school had no AC when I graduated in 1977. No AC in the classrooms, gym, or auditorium. The football locker rooms may have had AC. The classroom windows had 12-15" panels at the bottom that opened. Any time it was hot hey stayed open all day, with the blind slosed, but pulled up at the bottom. Every room had a strong fan or two.
None of the schools in the three towns where I lived had AC while I was in elementary, Junior high or high school.

Attic fans seemed to help make things more comfortable.
My house has an attic fan, and when my AC went out a few years back it was a lifesaver. It sucks a surprisingly large amount of air through the house, to where it was almost difficult to open the front door.

I went to summer school one summer semester at LSU and stayed in the Pentagon dorms with no AC. It really wasn’t that bad. You get used to it. But the dorm rooms had 12 foot ceilings and good ventilation so that helped a lot.

They came from Europe where it’s not as warm.

Your body gets acclimated to the temperature you stay in. I worked in Saudi Arabia for 2 years, it never got below 90 and most days were well over a 100. When I came home for my 28 days off I nearly froze to death in the winter but summer didn't bother me at all.

Until you get old. Now I'm sweating or freezing. It sucks

Climate change only started recently pushing temps in the south to 90+ degrees. My dad said he remembers most of the summers in South La in the 50's and 60's were 75 during the day and low 60's at night.
He also said Hurricanes didn't become dangerous until Katrina hit. Again climate change.
What were hurricane camille and betsy then?
