Real talk, I grew up in a small CENLA town about an hour from Ellick. We had to drive there to buy school clothes. It was a pretty big deal to go to the mall in the 80's.
Or go to a movie, or to a nice restaurant, or for any medical attention beyond primary care. When my orthodontist opened a satellite office in our town I was pissed because getting my braces adjusted no longer meant a full day out of school.

Exactly. Once you hit Turkey Creek exit on I49 and start seeing pine trees thats the end of coonass country.

Same as many other Louisiana cities. Mispronunciations. Alexandria abbreviated to Alex and then Alex is mispronounced as Ellic

Elecxandria shortened

At one time, pre-I49, there only three traffic circles in Louisiana, and two of them were in Alexandria.
A few of my buddies claim they once did 43 laps around the north traffic circle.

Don’t remember the north circle. I only remember the south one. My first trip though Ellick was in the mid1990’s when my junior high band played at Northwestern at state festival.
That was before 49 was finished in downtown Ellick and US90 was still being 4-laned between Morgan City and Houma.
All I remember seeing was the fly over ramps being constructed in the 1990’s and having to detour to the surface streets and our bus had to navigate the circle. If memory serves me right there was a large McDonalds at intersection where you could jump back on 49N and where you exited 49S.
It was like that to almost my senior year in high school in 1999. That was about when some of the sections of 49 in Ellick and US 90 started to open.

I mean, I didn't have any idea this was any sort of mystery to anyone.

Back in the 80s, I'll bet that mall was wonderful.
