I've heard stories about a great uncle of mine who had to leave town for a stretch because he once found some eggs. He said they were alligator eggs and convinced people to bet against him that they weren't gator eggs. Probably 25-30 people put in money.

Without the mother of whatever they were those eggs, of course, rotted. Being that they never hatched, it was never proven that they weren't gator eggs and my great uncle kept all the money. Naturally, people felt bamboozled and were quite sore that they got took. So, my uncle had to head North for a bit to let them settle down.

That was in the late 50s or early 60s. People were stupid enough to give a known unscrupulous man money on a sham of a bet involving gator eggs when our area had few, if any, gators at the time. Don't sit here and tell me that stupid, easily amused people just showed up on the scene. They're just much easier to expose these days.
