They probably aren’t making it. We’re on a tight budget having one in daycare. We make $140k/year with teacher benefits, and the idea that I’m going to save for my kids’ college is barely a blip in my planning right now.
Food prices are out of control. Utilities have increased. Gas at $3.50/gallon. Insurance rates are rising. Simple things like kids sports fee, school fees, and the like are all going up.
It’s insane. I have no idea how people on one income are making it.

We've had a serious Want vs Need problem in this country for a long, long time now. When times get lean people have a way of figuring out the difference between the two. Some figure it out the easy way, others take the hard way.

We make a little over 200k annual. Over the past 4 years (but not this year, or next, or after that ) I made the massive mistake of dipping into credit cards to help subsidize family vacations for 8 people altogether. The credit card debt is now kicking my arse, partially due to this ridiculous inflation. Some months we are paycheck to paycheck.
Bad decisions wrt using credit for those trips. The memories are real, and awesome. But if I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I’d make wiser choices.

Something has to change.
It won’t. They hate us. They’re happy for us to live long enough, spending most of our time working to pay off the debts, and then die before we understand their game.
Tough luck.

Hell, my credit is taking a hit because of more than a few cards I just stopped using for an extended amount of time.
Zero balance on them. It's a messed up system

We rarely eat out anymore. I like to cook so it’s cool, right? Lol no, groceries are up like 35 to 40 percent.

I’ve found several recipes that are lower cost than others. For now, pork chops are pretty inexpensive. Bought 6 thick cut bone in pork chops for $14 at a local butcher. Just over $2 a chop. We eat protein and vegetables for dinner mostly.
I’m driving a paid off truck and the wife’s vehicle is paid off. The mortgage is our only necessity bill we have and I’m fighting like hell to keep it that way. I WANT a new truck but don’t NEED a new truck. Got a side brokerage account I’m funding for when that day comes.

Im at my wits end. In September of 2022 I had about 5 months of expenses covered in savings. Since then I have had at least one catastrophic expense every month. Like expenses of the 8 to 10 K variety. I went from no debt, and healthy savings to no savings and maxed out cards. The latest one forced me to do a withdrawal from my IRA. The streak of bad luck I’m on is almost comical.
I don’t know how I’m going to catch back up, much less ever get ahead again. I have cut every luxury and activity, didn’t renew season tickets, turned down dinner invitations. It sucks. I lived a modest life before, and now I’m barely living at all.

Sold saints tickets
Canceled streaming services
Downgraded internet speed
No cable
No unlimited data plan
Minimize random purchases
Almost no impulse Amazon ordering
Lucky enough to sign a fixed mortgage before rates went insane in a house I can afford
Cook at home instead of going out most of the time
When we do go out share a side and maybe 1 appetizer.
Sacrifice my own random wants to save money to spend on the kids and my wife.
Have people over to drink instead of going to bars. Going to neighborhood dives instead of hipster mixology bars.
In other words, live like you did when you were young. Canceling all the fun but ultimately meaningless bullishit overrunning culture the last 2 decades makes it much more livable. Not only more livable but more enjoyable and fulfilling as well.
What’s infuriating is I was finally finding peace with the above and then covid happened. Even with all of the above the last two years or so I’m basically just treading water.

I sure hope this is a testimonial to idiocy and not a troll.

I make $120k and doing ok. Maxing 401k and Roth IRA. I live pretty simple though. Certainly don’t have a large house (but don’t need one either), happy with my sedan, and not really interested if big ticket items. Not having a family certainly makes things easy.
