My standard is usually don't let my cup get empty if there is hardly anyone there. Especially since I can get through some damn sweet tea.
That is fricking disgusting.

i had a friend who didn't tip if his server 'let me get thirsty'.
I've long ago accepted the fact that some people straight up invent reasons to justify their miserly cheapskate-ness. It's embarrassing to eat out with someone who is a shitty tipper.
I usually cover the difference after they leave and probably won't eat with them again.

If so it is terrible. Literally, it was like 2$ and change/ hr. for waitstaff. I hope that shite has been abolished or seriously improved, but just in case I haven't tipped less than 20% since '92.
Yep. That's about what I was paid when I waited tables. I have to consciously try to not over tip. Back in the day everywhere bar or restaurant I went knew I was service industry, so the bill was usually a little light so my tips were generally pretty hefty--though it all probably washed out in the end.
20% is standard for me now. 25% for really good service. 15% for terrible service. Anything below that and you should ask for a manager.

20-35% is the norm. Less depending on how bad the service is or if they screw something up.

Depends.
If the service from the waiter/waitress is good, usally 15-25%. If they give poor service and it is within their control (keeping my drink filled, etc.), it goes down.
If the food is poor quality, this does not have any impact on my tip, as they can't control the food.
If service is excellent, usually 30%.

It depends on how many tables the server has and how long I am there. For example if the server has 4 tables and I am there for 1 hour then I will leave about $1.50. I want to leave enough to get the server up to an average of minimum wage but I don't want to spoil them into thinking that waiting tables should be the top of their career ladder.

Typically I tip 20%-25%.

I've never been to Applebee's because I've never heard anything positive about it, but I'll be sure to try their damn sweet tea if I ever go.

Me too but I've tipped as little as 5% or less for really bad service.......oh and never went back.

Depends on service, food, etc
Average 20% but never less than that unless we get bad service/food or a combo of both.
Tipped 35% on anniversary, but the service was exquisite.

I hate when restaurants use small glasses...make it easier on everyone and use big glasses

15-20% unless HORRENDOUS.
If I am taking up prime bar space during an NFL Sunday or such? I tip more. Usually 20% and round up to the next $5 increment that is.

15-20 percent is considered standard in most communities.
15% usually means all was acceptable, 20% for excellent, over 20% for outstanding

Standard is 20%, with some variation up or down based on circumstances.
Around the holidays I usually tip more, except for foreign businesses that dgaf about Christmas.

Unless you are referring to the norm for yourself, this is not true. 20% is a good tip. 35% is if you are trying to impress a waitress with how rich and awesome you are so that she'll chase you down in the parking lot for the opportunity to sleep with you.
I'd say that 15%-20% is the normal acceptable range. Lower than that and the service was probably not great or the person is just a shitty tipper. More than that in rare occasions that a server really made your day.

The standard has always been 15%. It's a bunch of idiots and clowns that think 20% or higher is the 'norm'.
This pretentious lot that claims 20%+ is the norm obviously can't do math, much like Butch Jones. At 15% most wait staff will pull down $15/hr minimum. That's on par with something like a FEDEX driver who does a lot more, and works constantly through a shift.
This pity for waitstaff is overblown and ridiculous.
Also, all of you retards that tip so heavily, without fail - thanks jackasses, for lowering the standard for good service. Idiots.
