If they're good shoes worth keeping, just get the soles replaced when they get worn.

Are they tanker boats with a high gloss shine?

I bet you wear them marching in pride parades and while overcompensating on your unnecessarily loud bike!

If they are a nice pair of shoes, any decent cobbler can fix them.

Do you plan on being buried in them or something?

Just wear tennis shoes or a crappier pair of shoes when going to/from work, and chane into the nicer ones when you get to the office. That's what I do.

ETA: But I also don't drive to work so there's more walking involved for me.

You end up walking a lot living in the Northeast and my dress shoes weren't holding up for long. My previous boss shared some tips. You can put something called taps on the bottom of your shoes. Can possibly do it yourself but I'd go to a shoe repair guy

or you can add a thin sole to your soles. It goes on the outside of your existing sole and this rubber sole wears down instead of your actual shoes. Cobbler can also do this.

ETA: I have to get the taps or the sole replaced about once a year but my actual shoe has perfectly. The original soles are in perfect shape. The taps only costs $8 and the soles were $20 I believe.

I've started having rubber half-soles put on my leather-soled shoes. They get better traction.

Make sure you treat them right or they will find someone that will.

No problem

When I used to drink a bit I found that my shoe soles rarely showed much wear although my trouser knees wore out ridiculously fast !

Seaux... I suggest you drink more

Taps will protect if you tend to walk down the side of the heels. Nothing you can do for the soles. No big deal here. When they wear down a bit take them to a shoe repair and get the soles replaced. You can do a half half soles and heels or full soles and heels. I would recommend the full soles and heels. Depending on where you are it should be in the area of 50 bucks give or take.
