This. So much this.

If the ultimate result is a savings which is what they’re saying, then forego some of the lesser problems for a short period of time and take care of the priorities if this is the biggest one in their eyes.

IF, one would EVER hear about a REDUCTION in taxes, such as the bloated library board/others...I'd be more than willing to look at well thought out and reasonable proposals....until the powers that be can't/won't bring certain agencies to heel = NO NEW TAXES !

I thought we wanted to be more like Texas where they have higher property taxes instead of income taxes?

Not me. Property taxes are the worst form of taxation. Right up there with income taxes. It means that you never truly own your own home. I want a sales tax and nothing else.

Please note TX has no state income tax. You make 100K a year and save $3,300.

Please note many areas in TX like burbs of Houston have amazing schools so no need to spend 10K a year in private school tuition

Please note no tax on groceries in TX.

The savings of no state income tax more than makes up for the higher property taxes. Louisiana folks are still paying property taxes just about 2K less on a 200K home.

Amen. If nothing else let’s get rid of the Homestead Exemption and make everyone feel the pain. Probably be a lot harder to pass a new tax if it was coming from NBR also.

That's exactly what I described. You're going to pay an additional $2000 to $4000 on property taxes in Texas. (and less on sales too)

Schools here in Central are okay.

Louisiana doesn't tax groceries but yes locals do unfortunately.

On average it does for sure. We're talking about philosophy of what types of taxes are good and what types are bad though. Not really about net tax burden although that's a valid reason to be for or against a tax.

Mine is around 1600, but yeah. Most OT ballers are going to have a home that is worth $300k+ though. So somebody might pay $2500 here in LA but $6500 in DFW burbs.

I'm assuming you're making 100K a year or more so at a minimum $3,300

2,500 LA property tax + $3,300 in no state income tax = $5,800

Car insurance is 1/2 as well. What about electric? Cheaper due to energy deregulation. My October bill was $34.30 for a 3,887 house.

You're turning this into a Texas > Louisiana thread instead of sticking to the topic of taxes and tax policy.

I am torn

Does anybody trust those advocating for this money? The tax is even billed as a cost savings measure since they will redirect the mental health folks to a dedicated facility instead of jail (which is also supposedly cheaper).

...If that's the case, one would think the PD would publicly volunteer to reduce its budget once this community is permanently removed from their inmate population.

It's a cost savings for them, not for you

Bull shite. I used to encounter homeless people a lot more on my commute. Now I dont. Just because I don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t causing the tax dollars millions in their problems. Mental health is one of my major trigger points..... not because I feel a tremendous amount of sympathy, but I do believe it is maybe one of the biggest detriments to society

The COA shite was last administration. At least the bulk of it.

This is probably going to pass, as much as I wish it wouldn't.

Wife worked at mental health clinic, from the stories I heard I had to vote for. We don’t want those people roaming our streets.

I’ve always said we should have taxpayer funded mental health facilities. Lots of these folks growing up in terrible homes are a drain on the American people because they’re unemployed, have multiple kids, and live off the govt. There are reasons why they do the things they do and therapy could help them to see it’s not healthy or normal. It could turn their lives around and help them to break the cycle of shite they were born into.

In fact, I think it should be mandatory if you accept govt assistance.

Great.

When do they start rounding up the panhandlers and tossing them in this new facility I'm paying to run?

We aren't going to see any change except for the increased bill each year.
