But I honestly dread an even trade to the newer model year of any of these
This is where I'm at. I bought a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT brand new at the end of 2016. That was the first new vehicle I ever bought. Paid $42k for it (only financed like $31k after trade in). Got it paid off in 3 years. I was able to trade it in 5 years later (2021) and the dealership gave me $37k on trade in. This was when used vehicles were peaking in price. Traded up to a 2019 model (used) and only had to finance a total of $10k on that truck and I upgraded to the 6.2L.
I got a helluva deal on that trade-in/trade-up. But when I look at trading up now, there's no way I can justify it. The prices of these trucks now are insane. If I wanted a new one, even with my current one about to be paid off, I'd still have to finance $45k after trade-in and it's just not worth it. I'm just going to pay mine off next month and drive it until the bubble bursts and prices come down or until the wheels fall off.

Sec 179 is your friend.
But don't listen to me, I've only owned a successful business for 30 years and am debt-free.
Borrowed money comes in laughing and leaves crying.

I paid 32k for my truck new in 2017. The same truck is 50-55k now. I'll just drive it forever or keep fixing it. I'd buy a used Corolla before I paid 54k for an XLT

Minivan has more room than a suburban. Highly underrated vehicles
False. Suburban has more head, leg and shoulder room. Has 40% more cargo space if you are using third row seating

They also seem to just want it now; it doesn't register that their parents (and the majority of the middle class) didn't have all this stuff when they started out.
Absolutely.
My parents were born in 1941, so they were just a hair too old to be Boomers, but they weren't able to buy a house until they were almost 40 (actually, my dad was 40. My mom was still 39). And that was the first house we ever lived in that had central air.
They purchased exactly one new car their whole lives. Every other vehicle they ever bought was used.
We had hand-me-down clothes, bicycles, sports equipment. Only one family we knew ordered food to be delivered. We ate leftovers for days. We could only call long distance Sunday night after 6:00 when the "rates went down."
And all that was typical of the middle class in America at the time.

Never change OT. No matter the topic or the data, the OT is always the exception and NEVER the rule.
All the replies to the article will be some variation of "well ACKSHUALLY i use my truck to haul a trailer every single day or I take my boat out every weekend".
Then don't speak in absolutes. You and everyone else chooses to buy and maintain things they don't need. Note, the article didn't speak in absolutes, but you did. You could have said, "most people don't need a truck and many have a hard time affording the one they have." Instead, you went with "you don't need a truck."

Not if you already have a loss. hah. Bonus depreciation is your real best friend (although the benefits are sunsetting).

Dual income no kids and been buying nice cars for a long time. With my trade and down payments the notes are not bad.

Fellow ‘17 XLT driver. It hurt me to spend $35K on the crew cab when the single cab was under $20K (or maybe it was the GMC single cab at the time that was under and the f150 was $22,000).
I checked to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Ford’s website. Search inventory. Reasonable radius. They want $38,235 for a single cab XL trim f150.
I’m not playing this game right now.

Calm down, Karen. It was a general you and not you in particular.
My point is still valid and you are being a whiny bitch getting all rustled over semantics.

Not if you’re 6’5” and have rear facing car seats. Don’t have this problem in the Tahoe.
There are very few 6’5 individuals…0.2% of the population.
Very few families with two children under two requiring rear facing.
There are numerous mid size SUVs smaller and cheaper than a Tahoe that can fit two rear facing car seats.

Same. I was raised pretty anti-debt.
It doesn't bother me to go against the herd.

O.k., I'll say it then.
90 out of 100 people I see driving a truck don't need one, have no use for one, don't live on a farm, don't haul anything, don't tow anything, and for some reason (why I don't know) just think trucks are cool.
Probably 85 out of 100 people I see driving a large SUV don't need one, don't have enough children to justify having it, don't need it for travel or to carry pets or anything else. In fact, the more likely a family is to be able to afford a large SUV, the lower the chances that they have enough children to need one.

Suburban =/= Tahoe.
A Suburban is a bus. No kidding it’s bigger than a minivan.
