Houston is the energy capital of the world. It has the world's widest highway. Home to the biggest rodeo.
And, if you're paying attention, you know it's now the BBQ capital of the whole wide world! Austin and DFW offer some stiff competition but we can take 'em.
Does it have the tallest skyscraper in the South?

Houston isn’t a southern culture.
Cities that define southern culture are
New Orleans
Memphis
Nashville
Charleston

Look -- you have a point. Houston's museums are not "world renowned." But they are world class. Take a look at MFA Houston's collections and tell me otherwise. And btw -- I say this as someone who has lived in Europe and has visited plenty of world class museums, including any you could probably name off the top of your head.
Oh for sure, Houston has some good museums and art collections. But my point is most people nationally let alone worldwide do not associate Houston with that or ‘culture’ in general. I was trying to rein in the hyperbole of the guy I was responding to.

Not even close. Four outliers of the south are Atlanta, Miami, Houston and New Orleans. Charleston, Savanah or Nashville are much more indicative of large city southern culture. Some level of large city, while maintaining southern values.

You've clearly never been to Yeehaw Junction in Florida.

I see many people in this thread talking about New Orleans’ unique culture compared to Houston. That isn’t really what the thread is about. There is a difference between having unique local culture and being a cultural hub for the arts.
For example, Houston ranks second in the United States for the number of theater seats in a concentrated downtown area, and is one of only five cities with permanent professional resident companies in all of the major performing arts disciplines: the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Ballet, Theatre Under the Stars and The Alley Theatre.
The Houston Grand Opera is the only opera company in the U.S. to win a Grammy, a Tony, and an Emmy, and the Tony Award winning Alley Theatre is the third oldest continually operating theatre in the United States. It is considered to be one of the foremost theatre company outside of New York City and was a pioneering company of the regional theatre movement.
Then of course there is the thriving visual arts scene. https://www.christies.com/features/Art-cities-how-Houston-became-a-hotbed-of-contemporary-art-9568-1.aspx
Houston has a thriving culinary culture.
Etc.
I’m assuming most people on this website aren’t exactly big consumers of the arts, and aren’t spending time going to the symphony or ballet, so you wouldn’t have any clue that Houston is a thriving city when it comes to the arts and culture.

I thought Houston was just transplants from Louisiana and Mexicans.

Charleston is certainly the cultural capital of the South. It's not in direct contest with New Orleans because New Orleans is really it's own thing.
As far as major cities, Atlanta is a much more legitimate flag bearer for the cultural south, even though it has a lot of the same cultural "limitations" as Houston. But Atlanta has considerably more Southern history/impact attached to it.
Houston is developing itself into a world city, but that doesn't mean it has cultural influence. It probably will, in time.

That's exactly what it means.

Yep.
Houston wouldn't be top 5.

If we're even considering Texas as the south, there are a handful of cities to give this moniker to above Houston.
If we're taking distinct and unique culture, you have to have New Orleans at or near the top of that list and certainly well above Houston.
If we're taking a blend of international culture in a mixing pot, Houston is just Atlanta, Jr.

don't think Houston would even still be here if someone hadn't invented air conditioning

No it doesn't
Having well-financed art museums doesn't mean you're exerting your own culture on a region mere years after they're built. Houston has zero influence on Southern language, it has only moderate influence on Southern music, southern sports, almost no influence on the history of the South or Southern literature/visual art.
As I noted, it probably will, in time, because people will be drawn to your well-done art museums and people will gravitate toward Houston as Houston develops and exports a brand/identity to other parts of the region.

East Texas is definitely the South. Central and West, not so much.
Atlanta has always been the City of the South, or symbol of the New South

Culture isn't getting drunk a lot, saying house like a retard, and living in a shotgun house

True, but they're all smaller towns so they can't be a capitol, and none of the big cities are really southern.

Definitely.
