yes, i'd compare it to any where you want to compare to. i can find what you are looking for within an hour to 2 hour drive of Houston.
Skiing. Downhill or cross country.

Wow, man. You’re about as ignorant as it gets. Keep riding your little Boston dick. No one gives a Frick about that city.

Houston is the energy capital of the world. It has the world's widest highway
What does that have to do with culture???

Home to the biggest rodeo.
Meh. It's an average at best rodeo / stock show. Now, the entertainment at the end of the night is off the charts good.

And, if you're paying attention, you know it's now the BBQ capital of the whole wide world!
Not even close man. I'm not sure it has the best in the state, and is well behind KC.

Does it have the tallest skyscraper in the South?
Again, what does this have to do with culture.

There is a difference between having unique local culture and being a cultural hub for the arts.
I think this is where the thread is going. Some people define "culture" as unique local things, and others define "culture" as "the arts"
When it comes to the arts, museums, theater, opera, etc, Houston has a lot of this, and it's high quality. But these are all the result of $$$$$. Houston has a lot of rich people and companies who are willing to throw a lot of money at the arts.
But the same thing could happen in anywhere, USA, if the money was good enough.
You can buy "the arts", but you can't buy "local culture".

Baton Rouge held that distinction for two decades and no one made the claim that BR was "the cultural capital of the South".
You can go on and on and on about Houston, Atlanta, Nashville etc, but the truth is that there is only one city in the South that has inspired the works of Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, William Faulkner. Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Anne Rice, Emeril Lagasse, John Kennedy Toole, Sydney Bechet, King Oliver, Wynton and Bradford Marsalis, Louis Prima, Paul Prudhomme, The Neville Brothers, The Dixie Cups, Fats Domino, Dr John, Jelly Roll Martin, Harry Connick Jr., Professor Longhair, Buddy Bolden to name a few, and not to mention,...THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE ONLY DEFINITIVE AMERICAN ART FORM.
Throw in 10 Super Bowls and 5 Final Fours and...Sorry fellas. Love it or hate it, there is only one city in the South that has any rightful claim to be called the Cultural Capital of the South.

I can be on a cheap flight to any of those places within hours, next.

Houston strikes me as being within a couple of hours of almost any outdoor activity, but not necessarily a great version of that activity.
I've always said Atlanta is great because it's within 3-5 hours of solid mountains/camping hiking (less than 2 hours for lesser versions of that) and the same time to pretty good coastline/beaches.
I feel like Houston has a similar claim, obviously closer for the coast, although none of the nearby options are of very high quality. Hill Country is unique but I don't think it's a substitute for actual mountains or wilderness.

While I too enjoy being able to fly anywhere anytime, the ability to get away from a city isn't too great of a calling card for that city. It's certainly a Pro when looking to move somewhere, but no one is saying "man I love my city, it's so easy to leave it."

Dallas does have easy proximity to the west. As someone who has had to mull leaving easier access to beaches/mountains for DFW, that does help some, IMO.
Posted on 7/22/19 at 11:56 am to Pettifogger
For sure, I love the access I have while flying.
But if we're talking about having access to outdoor activities within a certain area, saying you can fly to a different area easily isn't a calling card.

You can say the same thing for Detroit or Memphis
ETA- and you said two hour drive, not flight

You didn't say fly originally. You said drive.

What’s your point. Saying Houston doesn’t have a massive amount of outdoor activities available compared to other Southern cities is a dumb statement. And if you still don’t disagree I’ll still take Houston over most other Southern cities due to the reasons I previously stated

It's not even the best for this in the state of Texas.
Austin shits all over Houston and Dallas in terms of outdoor activities.

You said you’d compare Houston to anywhere in regards to outdoor activities. That’s ridiculous
It’s pretty shitty for outdoor activities. That’s probably it’s biggest weak point

Atlanta, Asheville, East Tennessee cities, and most of Florida are better than Houston
What does Houston have that New Orleans doesn’t? And LA has way better fishing and boating

Chicago has much better outdoor options than Houston, as another example, and Chicago’s isn’t even anything to write home about.

Pretty much just access to Austin/Hill country terrain.
