and none of the big cities are really southern.
But that's pretty true of any big city, anywhere. They're just a hodge podge of recent arrivals.
"Southern" really doesn't mean what it did anymore. Mississippi is probably the closest to the old cultural South

fact, kids no longer even seem to have "local" accents

I know, it's weird.
People outside the South love Southern manners and a southern accent, as long as it comes with a decent vocabulary.

oh yeah, especially the women, used to pour it on thick when I was single and living in Chicago

I use it conditionally. Most people find it charming.

when I think of classic southern cities, Houston may be around 20th on the list

I used to work with a guy that is Cuban, his parents fled Cuba when Castro came into power, wealthy folks, he was raised in Manhattan, no accent whatsoever, but if a good looking girl was around he would instantly become Ricky Ricardo, very effective panty dropper

This may be a poor judge of a city's culture but maybe a good proxy for a fun city...how many bachelor/bachelorette parties choose Houston as their destination?

What an awful destination for that.

look i love Houston.
and I'm born and raised South LA baw.
Houston/Texas has more opportunities career wise.
Houston/Texas is a better place to raise a family.
Houston/Texas has an endless array of outdoor activities
Houston/Texas has an massive array of entertainment options.
Houston/Texas has a fricking great restaurant scene
Not to mention an international and domestic airport, 4 professional sports teams, and one of the highest park/population ratios in the country. and don't get me started at the amazing selection of women in this city from every possible background in the world.
but it does NOT have the same level of deep ingrained natural culture that South Louisiana has.
Maybe that'll change one day, but the only way i see that happening is when the Latino culture white washes all other Texas culture out.
so...by 2030.
as much as Houston tries to absorb terms like "bayou" and steal other culture from around the country.
Houston is not and never will be apart of "The South".
It's Texas, Northern Mexico, etc.... but not "The South"
I do really really enjoy a good chuckle at Houston culture stealing attempts. Like coining their flood drainage ditches as "bayous" or selling "Authentic Po'Boys" at Antoine's where you get 10 tiny frozen shrimp on stale french bread for $9. Or sprinkling Tony's on the outside of crawfish at crawfish boils. Some real head scratchers out there.

Houston is developing itself into a world city, but that doesn't mean it has cultural influence. It probably will, in time.
I think this is pretty spot on.
Also I’ve lived here basically my entire life and been all around the south and I don’t really consider Houston a southern city.

yes, i'd compare it to any where you want to compare to. i can find what you are looking for within an hour to 2 hour drive of Houston.

Breckinridge, Jackson Hole, Alaska, SoCal, Lake Tahoe
Houston doesn’t even come close.
