Texas Medical Center hospitals stopped updating key metrics showing the stress rising numbers of COVID-19 patients were placing on their facilities for more than three days, rattling policymakers and residents who have relied on the information to gauge the spread of the coronavirus.

quote:

The institutions — which together constitute the world’s largest medical complex — reported Thursday that their base intensive care capacity had hit 100 percent for the first time during the pandemic and was on pace to exceed an “unsustainable surge capacity” of intensive care beds by July 6.

quote:

Then, after reporting numerous charts and graphs almost daily for three months, the organization posted no updates until around 9 p.m. Saturday, sowing confusion about the hospitals’ ability to withstand a massive spike in cases that has followed Gov. Greg Abbott’s May decisions to lift restrictions intended to slow the virus.

quote:

When the charts reappeared, eight of the 17 original slides had been deleted — including any reference to hospital capacity or projections of future capacity. The TMC later called that update “incomplete.”

quote:

Houston Methodist CEO Dr. Marc Boom stressed that the new data was not reinvented — all the figures and projection models are the same — but was simply reformatted in an effort to make clear that reaching 100 percent of capacity in an ICU is a moving target. TMC hospitals have a combined 373 beds, for instance, that can become ICU beds with a “challenging” but “doable” amount of effort, Boom said, with the reassignment of trained staff and equipment.

quote:

Doing so would take the TMC facilities’ combined 93 percent ICU capacity as of the Sunday report down to 72 percent, the chart shows.

quote:

“This is just trying to be clear. We want to be as helpful as we possibly can,” Boom said. “Obviously, this got delayed a couple days because it’s complicated — you put 11 or so institutions together all trying to figure out something this complicated and trying to figure out how we express it a little bit more accurately — it took a while, a little longer than any of us would have liked, but simply because it’s complicated. I like what we came up with.”

quote:

The changes capped a week dominated by concerns over hospital capacity.

quote:

“The governor’s office believes all hospitals should be reporting accurate data to the state and to the public as often as possible,” Wittman said Sunday morning. “We demanded more information to share, not less.”

They were counting all hospitalized patients that happen to test positive for Covid as a Covid hospitalization. You can be in there for a broken leg, but if you test positive for Covid....you count.

They need to fix their data. It's difficult to predict if they will run out of resources at hospitals to fight this if they are playing politics with it.

I know people want to claim politics and fear mongering or whatever but I can buy this...

The hospital’s are at full ICU capacity line is BS.

My hospital is at 100% capacity of the designated ICU COVID beds. But we’re not at 100% capacity of ICU beds. We have around 65 ICU beds. But only 40 of them were designated COVID. We’re only holding COVID patients at one campus. We have 4 campuses. The other 3 can take COVID’s if needed. That would an additional 75 beds or more.

Are these the same hospitals that encouraged mass protesting in the streets?

Lol, bull fricking sheeeet. Why do you believe that? It’s very very simple. Each institution does a bed count, submits it to one person, they add all 11 up.

How freaking complicated is that? These CEO’s of hospitals acting like they can’t count their beds are full of shite.

yeah I'm not sure how basic math is so "complicated."

A business based on so much financial it seems this is info updated on a matrix automatically.

Makes you think there is financial play here that the hospitals like to keep those numbers close to their chest.

Lots of large cities run their ICUs at 80~90% capacity all of the time.

What really matters is surge capacity, and they should have a plan at this point.

TMC is still putting out numbers but it’s a different format to reflect the “new” capacity

they are shuffles patients around to help open beds. From talking to people that work over there, they are overwhelmed but this isn’t as scandalous as the headline implies

TMC has incredible data and it's current. Here you go:

TMC COVID patients

To summarize, Houston area has 2,200 ICU beds before surge capacity. 1,232 are occupied. 414 are COVID. They can do what we did in NOLA and cancel or defer electives to gain more capacity. STOP READING THE NEWSPAPER/TWITTER/OTHER FAKE CRAP.

Here’s something the hospitals now have experience with:

Covid loses them money...they have financial incentive to push the government to enforce measures to keep them well under capacity so they can turn a profit.

bullshite. These are supposedly smart people, people we are supposed to trust when they say "destroy small businesses" or when they say "shut the economy down" or when they say "wear masks". This is not an accident, this is either complete lack of leadership or intentional or best case overstating numbers for federal dollars.

If they don’t know their bed capacity, how are we to trust them to run a hospital? Knowing how many patients you have seems like a pretty dang important number to control.

There seems to be no communication with the governor and the private sector right now - id imagine the hospitals enjoyed being the center of attention a week ago then when elective procedures were shutdown, quickly realized the dilemma this caused. That’s exactly why the Texas Medical Center CEO backtracked last Thursday
