There is some truth to what you say. I and 3 other westerners that I didn’t know got in this situation in the middle of Beijing’s largest mall where this husband started brutally beating the shite out of his crying toddler (to the point where I think he broke some of his kid’s bones) and his wife in the middle of the mall. The Chinese people looked at it for half a second and then completely ignored what was going on. It was my second to last day in China and I knew if I intervened that every Chinese person in that mall would turn on me and I’d likely be beaten to death even if the other Chinese people knew it was the abusive father who was actually in the wrong. I am the outsider and if any outsider goes against one of their people no matter how vile or evil they may be, then they still protect the monster among them and destroy the Waiguoren.

The Westerners in that mall stood still and shocked, each of us looking at one another in horror on what was going on as the Chinese people ignored it. I went up to security (who watched it live) to apprehend that man, but his response was whatever a man chooses to do with his family is his own business. It was at that moment I was so disgusted that I was glad I was leaving the country in the pretty immediate future. I thought that never would America tolerate that, and the man would have gotten beaten within an inch of his life if he did that shite in the middle of a crowded mall. I hope we have not descended into that level of evil, but I’m afraid we have.

We’re turning into Communist China. I don’t doubt that a China of a century ago would have beaten that man I described within an inch of his life for child and spousal abuse, but the Chinese people while largely good people have been trained to ignore atrocities and don’t speak of them. They’ve been trained to walk past something as horrific as Auschwitz, look straight ahead, keep walking, and pretend what they just saw didn’t happen.
