Other than typo, this is the only thing to say to the police afterwards. Also, details on property would be nice. Is he in a neighborhood? Acreage? Have teenage kids whose friend might be sneaking in?

the locked door is the deterrent. If he's trying to get past that, I'm past trying to deter him.
true, but a flood light wasn't specified. Moreover, most floodlight switches are close to a door. Why throw a flood light on and run the risk of having the intruder shoot thru the door at me? frick him. I'd rather use the darkness to my advantage.
FTR, I'm just sharing my opinion and telling you what I hope I would be calm enough to do. I might shite myself and just start blazing away. I may freeze in disbelief and do nothing. But having played this scenario out in my mind and thought about it a great deal, I'd keep it dark and shoot the SOB thru the door.
I'll worry about the aftermath...after.

The doorway doesn't present some magical threshold between legal/illegal. The intruder was on the homeowner's property actively trying to get into the house. I think most would find the homeowner's actions justified.
Regardless of legal consequences I would never fire blindly through an exterior door because someone is fiddling with the door handle.

I would hope to do the same, but fight or flight is real.
I hope I never have to kill another human.

The amount of people who offer up gun advice that don't know anything is staggering

He lives in the Woodlands. Neighbors within 20 yards on both sides. Kids are both younger than 8. No family in the area.
I live on 10 acres in the country. Nearest neighbor is probably 500 yards from my front door. Two story house with 29 points of entry. Would take police at least 20 minutes to get to my house if they left immediately. My kids are teenagers

Once the intruders inters the home he/she is fair game. If you shoot them outside of the home, drag them into your house ( I have been told this by several police officers) and never shoot them in the back.
That's fricking terrible advice

In my circumstances, it is very much more likely that it is a drunk teenager or kid home from college at the wrong house than a burglar intent on breaking in while people are home and doing my family harm.
The exterior of my home is well lit, I have substantial front doors and an alarm system, no way I fire blindly at someone just jiggling the handle.

It's a lot harder for a dead guy to mount a prosecution/lawsuit against you than a live one. Unload the mag aimed at center mass.

False.
False is correct but it makes the defense argument in court A LOT easier.

The amount of rights criminals get is mind blowing sometimes

I'm not well versed with Louisiana's laws, but I don't believe you can be sued civilly for the using force while acting in self-defense.
However, the State can bring charges depending upon the relevant circumstances.

That's why I specified strictly home defense. There's no law saying how many shells I can have in a shotgun if I'm not hunting game.
