At what point could you shoot an intruder and be protected by law? Could he shoot through the door before ole baw got inside? He told me that was his biggest dilemma

The doorway doesn't present some magical threshold between legal/illegal. The intruder was on the homeowner's property actively trying to get into the house. I think most would find the homeowner's actions justified.

As to #2. My personal feeling is if I'm driven to to point where I have to use a gun on another human being, then I'm shooting to kill. If you've forced me to shoot you, I don't give a shite if you die as you clearly have no regard for your own life..

I found a looter on my property a couple days after Katrina hit. He was in a storage shed near my house, me and my nephew held him up with a pistol till sheriff deputies arrived. Had my wife and kids been there (they were staying with relatives), it might have been a different story.

Would you rather yourself be the only witness, or the "victim"?

You want a pump action shotgun with a really loud action if you are trying to deter someone.

So now you're down to 2 shells. What if there are 3 intruders? Always keep a full magazine of whatever your weapon of choice. If it's a home defense shotgun take the plug out.

I have no problem with blasting an intruder, but it seems like turning on a light would have been as useful as standing there debating when to shoot.

A buddy of mine recently woke up in the middle of the night to a noise outside his bedroom window. He grabbed his 12 gauge pump and walked through the house and heard someone at his back door. He aimed at the door from down the hall waiting for the intruder to get in the house. The criminal couldn't get past the deadbolt so he gave up and left.

Question: At what point could my friend have shot at the intruder and been legally protected? Before he got the door open? After he was inside?
Also, in this situation, do you shoot to kill or shoot to deter the intruder? He has a wife and 2 small kids and was caught between protect the family mode and protect himself from a legal standpoint.

Once the intruders inters the home he/she is fair game. If you shoot them outside of the home, drag them into your house ( I have been told this by several police officers) and never shoot them in the back.

are you kidding me? Turn on what light? the flood light? the hall light. Use the darkness for concealment (yours). I wouldn't want to do anything to give away my location or my presence. frick the guy on the other side of the door. He doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt or consideration.

as to "know what you're shooting at", thats fine if you're hunting wild game or sport shooting. But if you are in your home and you KNOW no one should be at your door- no roommate, kids, in-laws, ex-lover, whatever- should be at your door, shoot clean thru it. No way I'm going to allow someone (or ones) get the door open and gain ingress into my home. Last thing I want is to get into a shootout with 1 or more intruders breaching the door

You wouldn't try and deter the criminal before shooting him? Also, a flood light on one's face wouldn't give up your location. If anything, it would impair the criminal's vision.

Depending on the circumstances it may be better to at least have that issue in dispute rather than clearly to have been outside. You maybe could drag him in and then out again and say you shot him inside and he crawled outside and died.

Or just leave him outside and claim that he appeared to be going for a gun unless he was just clearly shot in the back.

My old 870 is my home defense weapon. Well, that and an alarm system and a couple of dobermans. I'll put it this way. If I have to shoot someone, they really wanted to get at me to kill me

Obviously it was best in this case to let the dead bolt do its job so no one had to be killed

I understand that perspective, but there is the opposite angle of what happened at the next house that guy went to though?

In AL, the second he feels threatened on his property, he has the right to defend.

whenever you shoot - you tell the cop you feared for you life, and would like a legal to obtain legal counsel

Can you find out first if he's just a dumb kid or harmless cat burglar as opposed to a homicidal maniac or methhead?

If the latter you just have up a key advantage to protecting yourself and you wife and children from horror and death.

Deterring sounds good and may be a good choice in some situations but there's consequences to that decision as well.

Not to mention if you simply deter, the perp may likely just come back later and you may not have the drop on him the next time.
