Then enroll in a different college.
All you have to do is pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get a summer job to graduate debt free.
Or, better yet, just be a plumber and be a millionaire by 23.
I’m told those are both, not only achievable but the standard path

Yeah, and I have two sets of twins...

FASFA and Sallie Mae throw money around like beads during Mardi Gras. Schools raised their tuition based off of 100% up front payment and ZERO accountability. They don't have to graduate a single soul.
Just be poor and qualify for FASFA and TOPS. When I graduated in 1999, my 1st year Tuition to Nicholls was paid for by TOPS and I got 1,600 a semester in federal aid. The next year, I started working at 6 dollars an hour and my FASFA was cut to zero because I was making too much money.
Now 6 dollars and hour barely covers a meal at McDonalds.

It’s $43k outstate now… at Alabama. Love Bama, roll tide and all that. But $43k for a state school that isn’t even top 100 is dumb.
43k to hang around a bunch of cousins is pretty crazy

Thankful that all of my kids will be going to college where my wife teaches. Huge discounts on top of TOPS, scholarships, etc.
They can go elsewhere if they get scholarships, but only 1/3 wants to major in something that is only offered at LSU.

it functions at all community colleges in the state, genius. nobody has to leave home to find room and board to get a 2 year degree.
LOL.. you can do basically the same thing with TOPS in LA.. stay at home, get tuition paid for, have mom/dad pay living and food expenses. I just don't get how you started off saying college cost included tuition/living/food and then turned it into TN offers a great deal but only pays tuition part of the college cost... OPs whole issue is with the living and food costs, which LSU will probably only get for 1 year, most move off campus after that

LOL at people who think having Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College on their diploma is worth $25k.
You can go to several state schools, get the same degree and the same job for half or less.

You must be pretty young. I remember it being like $1,600 or something like that (maybe less, like $1,200) in the mid 90's. Like everyone on the OT I had a full academic scholarship, but I remember seeing what it would have cost at some point.
I probably spent a lot more on rent, food, alcohol etc. than what tuition was back then. The rise in cost seems very disproportionate to other rises in costs...

Thanks but not quite, Class of '98 here.
I had to pay an "out of state" student additional fee.

Housing and $5k worth of “fees” that offset TOPS savings. It’s a racket.
If you want to save money, get a 24-26 on the ACT and go to Southeastern. They’ll basically pay you to attend school there.

Honestly, I'm thinking about pushing my kid towards a trade.

Dooming your kid to physical labor that is severely subject to economic conditions and generally low pay is a tough scene.
But do you brother

We spent, if you include apartment and utilities, food and supplies allowance, season sports tickets, sorority fees and event fees, tuition, books, fees, out of state fees, vans travel costs a sum of over $240k to send my daughter to OU.
Yes, it's expensive.
Got another one in his freshman year at UT-Arlington studying engineering and aerodynamics, planning to transfer to UT-Austin his Junior year if he qualifies for the Engineering program. At least he's in-state, no fraternity and even though he lives in campus housing, he's close enough to come home most weekends, so we expect to shave $100k off what it cost at OU.

Both my sons attend a State University in Georgia. They both have Hope scholarship (covers tuition) and one has additional (4K a year) scholarship. They pay for their own food and fun.
I pay fees, books, rent/housing.
By the time they graduate, I will spend about 50k total on the oldest and 35k on the youngest (who has the additional scholarship). I never saved a dime for them, cash flowing the entire thing. Currently it’s close to 2k a month.

I mean, I have at this point, several HS friends who learned skills and now own their own fab shops, mechanic shops, 1 guy who owns a plumbing company... a couple of electricians... I mean is it really that bad?
My wife does intervential radiology, good pay in the hospital for sure.
I'm in logistics and make pretty good money, whatever he does, I want him to be happy
