I just checked UF; tuition is $6,380 for a year (30 credit hours).

Community colleges in this area charge ~$100 per credit so ~$200 per credit at UF seems like a great value.

LSU seems to be double that, >$12,000.

That’s what it was last year. Tops covered tuition ($4k) and you were responsible for fees (2k). Per semester.

Right, that's how it's always been. Now I do believe LSU requires freshmen to live on campus now, is that correct? I assume you're right, the huge figure OP is referring to must be mostly housing, which is no less outrageous.

I blame the 1980's

Kids get higher hourly minimum wages that a quarter of annual college cost.

Whole thing is a political sham

Delay minimum wage increase long enough that when it happens, the cost of living has already gone higher. The younger you are the more college costs exceed your ability to pay for it.

I would be getting my kids to skip college and learn a trade like plumbing or electrician.

There aren’t many fortune CEOs

There are probably 10s of thousands of humanitarian majors drowning in student loan debt. It’ll just make smart, ambitious people pick different majors.

They’ve always “required” it. You don’t actually have to

this why I put whites for the Republicans and low educated blacks vote for the Democrats.

Pretty simple.

Low educated whites live and die by Fox news and their bullshite.

Low educated blacks live by MSNBC and their bullshite.

Irony of course is that all the info they offer is instantly available on a device we all hold in our hands…for free!

I wouldn't confuse owning a smart phone or PC with actually granting any knowledge to the owner. That's the same mistake as believing a degree grants any useful knowledge to the degree holder.

Universities, like most educational institutions, have become adult job programs. Lots of administrators running around with fancy titles and multiple six figure salaries not doing much of anything worthwhile.

Gotta pay for that and all those fancy new buildings somehow.

State universities in particular have lost their way and true purpose which was to provide a good AFFORDABLE education for its state citizens.

Our oldest just graduated from LSU. She graduated from St. Joseph’s academy in 2020. She wasn’t super social. School was her thing. She had her heart set on Auburn or Clemson. Got scholarships from both. Not full rides. I think it would have been 12k- 15K a year to send her to Clemson or Auburn after the scholarships plus rent. but she got the top tier TOPS from LSU, so we said you have to go to LSU. We have 5 kids and the private school tuition for elementary and high school is plenty. Plus her brother just 13 months younger than her didn’t get the top tier TOPS : /
He got the one beneath it. & don’t get me started on car insurance and cars for 3 kids - our oldest being a HORRIBLE driver. The girl wrecks at complete stops while waiting for lights to turn green. She’s a total spazz. The other 2 are ok drivers and I’m thinking our 2 youngest will be as well, but they’re boys and one is a daredevil

Loans should also be dependent on major.

Loans should not be handled by the US Government at all. They should be issued by private banks only and approval/denial left entirely up to the private banks.

Take away all those loan programs and they will be forced to bring tuition back down or die.

Administrations would also be cut significantly. Which is a good thing.

Niece just got accepted to Iowa and it will end up being $192k for out of state for a Public school.

Unbelievable.

For a school in the bottom half of the B1G.

btw-Looks like OOS UW-Madison is a fair bit cheaper than Iowa, which is surprising. Harder to get in to though.

OL - "well, they have to have a place to eat and sleep unless you want them living out of their car & eating at mcdonalds." .. Who is paying this extra 15-20k per year ?

TN Promise just covers the actual tuition very similar to TOPS.. if you are getting 7-8k at LSU, that may cover full tuition at another in state LA school about .. but NOT room and meal plan...which TN does not pay either
it functions at all community colleges in the state, genius. nobody has to leave home to find room and board to get a 2 year degree.

I have a daughter at Swarthmore and it's the exact same. She did receive $100K scholarship that "discounts" that amount by $12.5 k per semester, BUT they have increased tuition almost every year.

And that doesn't include flights to and from, winter clothes, etc.

FASFA and Sallie Mae throw money around like beads during Mardi Gras.

Schools raised their tuition based off of 100% up front payment and ZERO accountability. They don't have to graduate a single soul.

It's criminal.
