The virus has been around a month or so. In that time, there are 186,000 cases. Say that's underreported by 2/3, so 600,000 total cases.
Now, say there would be 5x as much virus transmission without quarantine. That's 3 million people infected in a month.
We have 197 or so more million to go until we get to herd immunity in your model. That underlines how we could be screwed for a very long period of time in terms of systemic burden and mortality.

You see how it’s basically saying an “unchecked” spread would have been done with before the longer one ever hit its peak? That’s the point. A low peak = a longer, more prolonged spread. We are doing that on purpose. We are not trying to make this end faster.

They are trying to limit the spread. Closing non-essential business would limit the spread. Eliminating it completely is not realistic.

The first reported case was confirmed in the United States back on January 20. So it's actually been here for almost 2 1/2 months.

You're ignoring what I'm saying would end faster.
I'm not saying this idea makes the virus end faster. I'm saying this makes the time period the virus would exert catastrophic consequences end faster or not occur at all.
Put another way, 10 million new Covid infections a month would probably be catastrophic to our functioning in many areas of life. Yet, we could sustain 10 million new cases for ~20 months before we hit herd immunity levels.

The shut down will do far more damage to Americans in the long run and this is coming from someone who’s wife is sick with the virus right now. I don’t think people realize how fricked we are going to be if this shut down drags on.
