I agree 100%. I will never understand why in this free country people would willingly live under and join a communist organization and live under a dictatorship. If I want to fly a American flag on my house I will do it 24/7 not only when the HOA tells me I can. No, I will not take it down because it might offend my mexican or muslim neighbor. If I want to put a basketball goal in my driveway I will do it. If I want to park in my driveway and not my garage I will do that also.

Ours stay in the garage until trash day. Sometimes I deploy them late the night before (12 or 1 am) since they have been known to show up early (4 or 5am) the next morning.
This right here proves how stupid this whole thing is. You have to get up in the middle of the night and put yours out because the trucks run so early. Yet you cannot put them on the curb the night before. Real geniuses in your neighborhood. I am shocked they don't have a noise regulation that doesn't allow the trucks to run that early.

When used how they were originally intended (hounding undesirables until they move) they can be great.

Absolutely! But the problem is that all they can do is send letters and fine the shite out of trashy neighbor. And really, the only way they can enforce anything is with a lien. That only hits the offender upon sale of the house.
HOAs here in Texas can foreclose.

do agree, but I wish we had a better solution at my house than keeping it in the garage.
You live in a HOA neighborhood but don’t have a backyard with a gate access? That’s where everyone keeps their cans. Out of sight on the side of the house.

What do people with once a week pickup and trash cans in the garage do with food waste? Freeze it til trash day?

There are some amazingly uptight mofos in this thread. OMG, someone can see my trash can!!

If I'm off work the next day, I'll be up anyway.
As far as food being thrown away I keep it frozen or refrigerated until trash day.
The amount of food we throw away is sinful.
Never go to the grocery store when you're hungry.

I unfortunately keep mine outside of the garage, I could keep them in the garage- but I prefer not to have the stink

There is no way I would do this. Especially in AZ summertime.
Thankfully our trash is picked up in large shared bins in an alley behind our house.

Just another reason I'd never live in an area with an HOA in effect. I don't take well to people telling me how I have to live, or conform to their so-called standards or face fines or lawsuits.
I think I'd go postal on someone.

That’s what I do. My trash can stays on the side of the house behind the fence beside the AC unit and my compost tumbler (fence extends from the side and connects with my neighbor’s). Even outside, it’s going to stink and me and the kids spend a good amount of time in the backyard.

This is ridiculous, imo. You can take my home, that I'm paying for, because I didn't follow some arbitrary rule that some stiffs created? Should not be legal.

Well let me clarify... HOA can foreclose for failure to pay HOA dues. I don’t think they can foreclose for failure to pay HOA fines but I’m not positive.
Coming from Louisiana and now living in a Texas suburb, I appreciate the HOA. There are just too many trashy people in the world.

I understand that there are plenty of people who choose to live under the authority of HOA's. That's your decision. I prefer the freedom to do things that are perfectly legal, on my own property, without being penalized for it.

We get it. You don’t want to live in an HOA. No one is forcing you, or others, to do so.
Many people, in nice areas/cities/towns, chose HOA to maintain or increase house value. If you want to live in an area (usually further away from nicer amenities, that is fine. But if you want to live somewhat close to all of the city attractions and have to pay a premium for that; you do not want your neighbors parking work truck in the front yard /leaving grass in-mowed for weeks. It brings down your house values (as mentioned above - matters when you are already paying a premium).
Most HOAs are fine. Of course there will be a few with some busy bodies on there (usually retired) who have higher standards. As long as you keep the yard tidy; abide the rules (how hard is it to put trash can in garage or behind privacy fence) most people will benefit from an HOA.
It isn’t Nazi Germany. No one forced you into living under the HOA rules. You sign the legal documents and are thereby bound. Don’t like it? Move.

HOA and Trash Cans
We used to live in a neighborhood and I hated when people left their trash cans in front of their house. Our HOA would send friendly reminders, but never threatened fining people. Hell, we live in the country now, but I still keep our trash can behind the shop because I don't want to look at it

I don't see the issue with the can on the side of the house.
As if an arbitrary 5 boards that are hiding what is obviously a trash can is more practical.
So long as trash is in the can... that is what trash cans are for.

House is on a corner, and the backyard gate is on the opposite side from the driveway. Not in a spot that would work for the trash without pulling it through a bunch of grass, unfortunately.
Our neighborhood is small, and not really uptight about visible trash cans. But my SO is the HOA president (I know, I know), and super anal about the yard. No other option but the garage. I’ll start freezing scraps til trash day.
