I understand that there are plenty of people who choose to live under the authority of HOA's. That's your decision. I prefer the freedom to do things that are perfectly legal, on my own property, without being penalized for it.
You do realize that most cities have ordinances concerning cutting your grass, building materials on your house, storing your boat in your front yard, etc?
The vast majority of people don’t want to live around trashy people. And unfortunately, a lot of Louisiana falls into that category.

I could keep them in the garage- but I prefer not to have the stink
Our house seals up like tupperware. Stink fortunately doesn't make it into the house.

I refuse to keep trash or recycling in the garage. Not just bc smell but also roaches. I never notice the smell when the cans are outside. Even with dirty diapers.

You look for a home, like it, buy it, happens to be in a neighborhood that has an HOA. You do realize that's how it works, right? It's not like you can rebel against it. Well, you can, but you'll get hit up with fines coming out the arse and will have a lien placed on your house.

If I want to put out the garbage in my speedo playboy brand underwear with no shirt I should be able to do so. This is what makes America great!

People that buy a 300k house in an HOA neighborhood then subsequently complain about living in an HOA neighborhood are the epitome of a pathetic millennial.
Do your research before spending big money.

Finding a house without a HOA was number at the top my list when I was looking for the house I currently own. Have owned 8 houses over the last 35 years 5 were governed by HOAs, never again.
