Lusitania ring a bell?
The RMS Lusitania was a British passenger liner operated by the Cunard Line, sailing from New York to Liverpool. On May 7, 1915, the German submarine U-20 torpedoed her off the southern coast of Ireland. A single torpedo struck her starboard side near the bridge, and she sank in only 18 minutes. The commonly cited death toll is 1,198 people, including 128 Americans.

The Lusitania was carrying military cargo, including rifle ammunition and artillery-shell components, as well as civilian passengers. Germany used the presence of war materials to defend the attack.

Yes, we should have. Reason being that while we were trying to sell to both sides, the British blockade made selling anything to the Germans hard. As such, we sold a shite ton more to the British and they owed us money. We had a vested interest in ensuring a British and allied victory to get our money back.

It’s amazing that the British made their last wwii payments in 2006. Those bastards never did fully repay wwi.

And the Zimmerman Telegram, which was released in March 1917. It was promising Mexico all their lands back in the Southwest if they joined in an alliance with Germany, if the US entered the war.

Germany had Russia on the ropes and thought they had it won, wildcard was US entering the war. They thought Mexico could sideline the US and keep them out of Europe.

Not an expert here but I seem to recall this was the last war of the old school Royal Family/Aristocracy class in Europe.

No.

We got suckered in by Britain. Wilson was such an Anglophile he was itching to get into the war.

In the first one?

Yes. The sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 killed over 100 Americans. Then in early 1917 Germany started back with the unrestricted submarine warfare without warning after they had chilled out after the outrage of the Lusitania incident.

There was also the intercepted communications where Germany was offering to form an alliance and help Mexico to take back Texas.

ETA: Not to mention that the government and American banks had given a lot of money to Great Britain and France in loans for their war effort. So, of course the US wanted to put a finger on the scale to make sure the money was able to be paid back.

Honestly, no.
That was a standard European war without the moral crisis of WW2.

And weren’t we Monroe Doctrine isolationists by policy?

The only argument was humanitarian with the nature of the trench warfare stalemate. Had that continued much longer than there truly might not have been many men left in Europe.

shite. I forgot about the Germany/Mexico thing. Nvm.

Zimmerman and Lusitania got us in it. Though the war was already almost done by the time we ramped up.
82 to 6 in congress to go to that war.

Only one person voted against ww2.

Look up Gallipoli disaster. That was Churchill’s baby and almost ruined his political career. The Germans had the Ottomans on their side, tying up the Brits.

I mean, those "merchant" ships weren't just carrying food and record players. "Neutral" ships carrying weapons should be fair game.

Germany was completely justified. Britain vehemently denied it was transporting arms, but has also forbidden any inspection of the wreck (which is in relatively shallow water and easily accessible).

Yes they were. It was considered poor form to not notify the ship prior to torpedoing it. That is an opinion from the eventual winner.

Germany used to do that. They would surface and warn the ships.

Britain starting putting deck guns on their.merchant shipping and would shoot at the subs while they were surfaced and actually sunk a few.
