A good point and we should add that there's plenty of evidence that the most important military leaders in Austria Hungary were determined at that time to attack Serbia. Their motives were very stupid, and centered upon a kind of metaphysical notion that the Austro Hungarian Empire was losing its masculinity and strength and needed this war to restore its vitality.

Austria Hungary's determination to invade Serbia was IMHO the most important reason why things blew up in 1914. Austria rather dragged Europe down the path to war.

Kaiser Wilhelm hesitated right before the first shot when he heard that Britain would not declare war if Germany did not invade Belgium. Wilhelm actually contacted his Military Commanders and expressed a desire to halt the military movements across the border. The military told him that it was already too late because the first elements of the military advance guard had already taken an armored train across the border into Luxembourg.

Kaiser Bill was NOT the warmonger here.

You're right. I did a bit of googling after I posted the comment, and basically the consensus was that if we had wanted to stop communism, we would have needed to start our support as early as 1905, and Russia would basically have had to sit out WWI entirely to stop it. Communism arose because of War and Famine. (like you said)

Nuclear technology and a lot of other tech probably pushed down the road 10-20 years

Maybe, but I seriously doubt it. The Germans were the first working on nuke tech.

You pretty much nailed it regarding the Kaiser. Even the WW1 museum in KC doesn't portray him as a tyrant, instead it portrays him as you did in your post. The Kaiser didn't want want, got backed into it due to the Alliance with Austria, and the Prussian military elite were pushing for war.

Love this thread as WW1 is a subject that I find much more interesting than WW2, which has had volumes on it, and set the stage for the entire century and the geopolitical climate to this day.

if anyone is the villain in WW1 it is probably Austria.

If any of you are ever in Kansas City, carve out a day to visit the WW1 museum there, it is awesome.

Hint - if you plan on going up in the tower make sure you do that first if it's operating and get that done as it does shut down if conditions change.

Yeah. Pretty much every leader was related.

There's a YouTube channel called The Great War that dives into WWI in great depth

1 thing they did was go through the correspondence between the monarchs in question during the July Crisis (the fever pitch of diplomatic maneuvering between the Archduke's assassination & the actual start of hostilities)

They would sign the letters to each other as "Nicky" and "Georgie" and "Willie" to try to keep it light & not seem hostile even as they defended their country's positions

They also invoked their familial relationships in trying to keep things from turning hot

The Tsar had an unreliable military because of things associated with 1905 and the Revolution at that time. The Potemkin incident was indicative of things at the time. Sailors were being told that they had to eat maggot filled Borscht, the officers said eat it or else. The sailors mutineed and tried to get the whole Black Sea fleet to follow. That was averted due to some very brutal action by the Russian government. Which was preceeded earlier in the year when Imperial Troops opened fire on peaceful but large protests in January of that year which was a result of almost 5 years of what could be deemed a depression. Then you have Nicholas being forced into some reforms after the October uprising that year when he faced wholesale general strikes across the nation.

Russia was truly a lost cause before Princips even thought about wasting an Austrian Duke. 105 makes Lenin the top communist and it's when he meets Joseph Stalin whom most considered a gangster.

IMO a communist revolution in Russia was always going to happen . Russians could have liquidated Lenin and you would have still gotten the same result

Missing pieces.

Colonization is word today that is a hot topic.

During the 1800s and before, all the European powers were trying to out do each other by establishing colonies in the Balkans, Africa, and Asia.

Before 1870 France was a mess.

The Franco Prussian War of 1870 saw France get its' arse kicked by the Germans and Bismark.
This is why Clemensue was pissed at the end of WW1 at the Germans.

Austria was trying to establish a colony in Serbia in 1910 thus triggering a terrorists group 'The Black Hand' that assassinated the arch Duke and his wife.

In 1912 France was in disarray (much like today) .Russia had borrowed 7 million francs that it could not pay back.
Alliances - everyone had each others ' back if attacked.

And a naval arms race to top it off.

Princip set it all in motion but all the elements for a war were already in place.

The US should have stayed out of it and allowed Germany to kick Frances' arse again and the Tsar would have survived .

What Wilson did not take into consideration was the intense bad blood between France and Germany stemming from the Franco -Prussian war in 1871 where France was routed and Napoleon III was captured and the French lost Alsace and Lorraine then add to it the sheer horror of WWI and the carnage that the French mostly had to endure. France was never going to let the Germans off easy in a negotiated peace.

My grandma was from Alsace-Lorraine and immigrated as a little girl. She's German. The region is German.

I can see why it was contested territory between the two countries.
