History Channel's 'Grant' Is a Timely Reminder of Which General Actually Won the Civil War

A Military.com article taking pot shots at southern Lost Causers. The docuseries premieres Monday night on the History Channel.

President Ulysses Grant gets a three-night spotlight on the History Channel with "Grant," a six-hour series that combines documentary and docudrama to explore the life of the West Point graduate who became commander of the Union armies during the Civil War before becoming the 18th president in 1869.
The show's first episode premieres Monday, May 25, at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will continue with two-hour episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time. Noted Grant biographer Ron Chernow (who also wrote "Hamilton") executive-produced the series, alongside noted history buff and Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
U.K. actor Justin Salinger portrays Grant in the reenactment scenes, and his story is fleshed out with commentary from luminaries like Chernow; retired Army Gen. and former CIA Director David Petraeus; acclaimed author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates; and Elizabeth Samet, a professor of English at West Point.
Robert E. Lee may have been the star pupil at West Point and currently the most-celebrated military man of his era, so it's easy to forget that he commanded the losing side in the Civil War.
Grant was the actual winner in that war, and he went on to serve as president as the country struggled to reconcile its split and reunite during Reconstruction. He's a towering figure in American history, and this new film will hopefully contribute to a greater appreciation of the role he played during this most divisive era.
"Grant" follows the History Channel's successful "Washington" series, which was a huge success back in February with action scenes directed by Roel Reiné ("Hard Target 2," "Seal Team Eight: Behind Enemy Lines"). Mike and Frank digging through the junk on “American Pickers” is always a guaranteed good time, but it's nice to see some actual history back on the History Channel.

Can't wait to hear about Grant's views on States Rights.

Is it really though? I feel like that is the first thing that comes to mind when Lee is mentioned--that he was a Confederate general. Pretty sure everyone knows the Confederacy lost the war.

Inb4 drunk, just sacrificed his men to overwhelm Lee, not as good of a general as Lee, etc.

Inb4 drunk,
In fairness, he was a raging drunk. But that is more broadly connected with his time as POTUS rather than his service in the Civil War.

I see no pot shot in that quote. It's all true.
What's not right in this part?:

I've always been so impressed with Grant's Vicksburg Campaign.
Grant always had an impressive body of work as a general. This article attempts to tackle notions that Grant was "butcher," which I think became a popular myth to justify Grant's successes. LINK
I'll definitely check out this film.

Does anybody actually believe the South won?

That this

and this

are somehow "lost" facts that no one remembers anymore.

Probably exaggerated, but I suppose it depends on your definition of "raging drunk".

Meh. He was one of the first to understand total war. I will give him credit for that. He was well resourced and made full use of it. Congrats I guess.

Can they really not find an American actor to handle this role?

I seem to remember reading accounts of Grant being stopped by police in DC for wreckless/drunkenly driving around Washington in his carriage during his Presidency.
I'm sure most of these guys drank their fair share. And I don't consider it to be a huge deal or have any implication on his abilities or service. Just found it humorous

Weird thing to be upset about.

They can, but he'll be black. You good with that?

Before we have to rehash this thread again.
On almost any given day, Lee was Grant's tactical superior.
But...and this a big arse but... Grant was ahead of his time. He understood logistics better than any military leader of his era save Forest.
Lee was outmatched.
