Historic Day: Israel and Sudan agree to normalize relations in a U.S.-brokered deal

srael and Sudan agreed to normalize relations in a U.S.-brokered deal that was announced on Friday. The agreement ends decades of animosity between the two nations as Sudan joins a number of countries that have recently agreed to sign a peace deal with Israel.
The deal will be significant for Sudan, whose relationship with the United States deteriorated in the 1990s after the U.S. invoked sanctions against the African nation for harboring Osama bin Laden, who was then the terrorist leader of al Qaeda. In exchange for their participation in the deal, the U.S. will remove Sudan from a list of countries it considers to be state sponsors of terrorism. Formerly, Sudan's inclusion on that list has prevented the struggling country from receiving certain forms of international aid.
Earlier this year, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain agreed to normalize relations with Israel, as former enemies in the region find common ground in their desire to prevent Iran from gaining influence.
quote:
The historic arrangement between Sudan and Israel illustrates a complete revision of the African nation's former attitude toward peace with the small Middle Eastern nation. In 1967, following the Arab-Israeli war, Sudan hosted the Arab League summit in Khartoum, where the eight participating nations agreed to the concept of the "Three Nos": No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, and no negotiations with Israel.
Also a WSJ link, but it's behind a paywall. The above article is free.

Ya, well, let me know when Drumpf does as much for peace in the middle east as Obama.
Obama won a nobel peace prize for his work. What has the cheetoh won?

We are over here bickering about all the crazy shite on Hunter Biden's laptop or "black lives matter" while there appears to be a MAJOR advance into peace in the middle east.
2020 isn't all bad.

We are going to need to produce more Nobel Peace Prizes.

I did not have peace in the Middle East in my October 2020 betting pool

Never really hear about Sudan causing trouble. Somalia on the other hand...

Some of you folks downvoting me should know better than to think I really think this way.
Of course the sad part is that folks that don't really know me find this type of stupid drivel completely plausible for someone to really believe.

There's a reason foreign policy was not a major topic of the debates.

Edit because I am dumb and misread a word.

One big international story that American media completely missed in between breathless coverage of Trump’s outrage of the day was the revolution in Sudan which began in 2018. This revolt ousted the dictator who had ruled with Sharia Law since the 1980’s and had allowed Sudan to host all numbers of radical Islamist militants and terror groups. Over the past 2 years, the new government has eliminated Sharia Law from the government court system, banned genital mutilation of women, and de-criminalized alcohol consumption by non-Muslims in addition to many other reforms to Westernize and secularize their government. This peace agreement is just the next step towards a modern, tolerant, cosmopolitan, and free Sudan.
As for those who don’t remember Sudan causing trouble, they harbored Osama in the 90’s, committed genocide in Darfur in the 2000’s, and fought a 30 year civil war which finally resulted in Independence for South Sudan (the majority black, majority Christian portion of the country) back in 2011.

I'd argue that Sudan has caused more trouble than Somalia, by far, Al-Shabab notwithstanding.
Besides being the host country of the Arab alliance committed to the destruction of Israel, it was Bin-Laden's base of operations and training center, all with the blessing of Sudan's corrupt leader...the only world leader with an international warrant for his arrest.
This is a stunning turn-around.

I literally had no clue that this was taking place. That’s awesome.

There’s good, hard working Americans right now sitting around the dinner table, trying to figure out how to buy tires. And y’all talking about peace in the Middle East? Hell wrong with y’all?

Sudan is neither middle east nor a neighbor of Israel. It's 750 miles away, with most routes going through water And can we pinpoint a time in recent history they've been at war?

I'm not sure if it had changed recently but there was a time when a lot of the weapons used by Hamas in Gaza came through Sudan as well. Sudan did more than lend the usual rhetorical support to terrorist groups, they helped arm them. In 2009 and then in 2012 Israel actually launched air strikes there.
