Had a 2015 JGC 4x4 (Overland Trim). Absolutely one of the worst vehicles I've ever had. Drove it for a year, traded it in. Didn't help that service dept at the dealer here was waaay less than stellar. Lesson learned.
Had a 1992 4R - put 200,000 mi on it, very low cost to own; also owned a 2003 Sequoia put 200K plus and passed it down to a kid, spent very little on repairs outside of normal maintenance on that vehicle. Can't go wrong with Toyota.
GC is great looking though, and can get them for a song. Got mine for invoice -6% in a group buy deal. Made it easy to get out of so early. If you buy one, go to jeep cherokee forum and look for forum group buys in your area, or for that matter anywhere.

Of the cars stated, I’d go with the JGC or 4Runner. But as someone else already stated, the new VW Atlas is nice and I would look at that as well. Large third row and a very large cargo capacity.

I like the Atlas as well. VW's are expensive AF to fix non-warranty items and after warranty expries. Oil changes are $100+ since they need (recommended) full synthetic etc. That should obviously be taken into consideration.

Highlander is tops in reliability next to Lexus 350ES from Consumers Report. Just be smart unless you want to spend time and money repairing the others.

Right off the bat, had a rattle that sounded like it was coming from engine compartment on driver side when vehicle would get to around 55 mph, never found source.
Some flaw with suspension (had multi-mode suspension, forgot what option is called) where it would give a fault message and the vehicle would be stuck in greatest height mode. Looked like a jacked up truck.
Crash mitigation spontaneously activated on several occasions for no particular reason driving in town, luckily car wasn't plowed from behind.
Gremilins in electronics - one of best examples was that I would get a flash flood warning pop up when it hadn't rained in weeks.
Multiple pain in the arse, and at the time we didn't have an extra car, just mine and my wife's - and dealer of course didn't provide a loaner (lesson learned regarding value added with luxury car dealers - loaners provided even when take car in for oil changes - I didn't take the loss of this perk into account when I bought the JGC).
I was disappointed with some of the detail in fit and finish, that I probably could have lived with had I not owned cars that were exceedingly well put together.
Sum is I don't have time to be bothered with that kind of stuff, and I don't have the time to be jousting with a car dealer.

I love the 4 runners, but I also like the truck type ride. That's part of the reason I drive a 4 x 4 FJ.
I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited as my fleet vehicle, and it drove incredible. Super smooth ride. It is build on the Mercedes chassis. I put almost 40K in 9 months with no issues.
If it were my money, I would buy a Toyota. The summit is not cheap either. I would go 4runner limited over the Summit.

Loved the atlas until I got on interstate. Was shocked at pickup and had little shake as well

Biggest knock on Atlas I read was it is underpowered.

Everyone confuses the Grand Cherokee with the Cherokee. The Cherokee is indeed garbage but has nothing in common with the Grand.
The Grand Cherokee has the same base engine/trans that they use in the V6 Rams, Jeep Wrangler, etc. It's a great combo. And as someone else said, it shares a chassis/platform with the Mercedes ML line.

Look at the yota limited platinum editions. We did and they are just as nice inside as any other type you're going to look at.
There isn't anything you could ask for they don't have.
It has the saddle leather interior with full moon roof and very feature to go with it.
We went with the highlander and neighbor went with 4 runner same everything.
Neither are a bad choice

1) test drive Highlander>4runner
2) Room inside Highlander>4runner
3) Price Highlander>4runner (We bought the XLE)
4) Resale value - 4runner>highlander (who cares its a toyota)
You will 100% walk up to someone else's highlander in the parking lot thinking its yours. I do it every weekend.
I don't think your making a mistake going with either though, its just your wife's preference.

we considered both the 4runner and highlander. we went with the highlander because it is for driving the kids around. The 4 runner was more truck like which is fine with me, the highlander is more car like. with the 3rd row, you can easily have 6 people in it with no problems.
I would not consider a jeep in my opinion.

Another think to consider that may or may not apply is the chassis.
Highlander has a unibody and shares the frame with a Camry.
The 4Runner is a body on frame truck chassis, 6-lug, etc.
You'll give up some ride quality choosing the 4Runner, but you will have added safety for occupants by having a steel frame.

Except that the Highlander has a better crash rating than the 4Runner.

I see safety the opposite way. The Highlander has far more active and passive safety advantages and meets or beats the 4Runner in every NHTSA and IIHS crash test. Both on avoidance and survivability the Highlander has a rather solid advantage.

I've had both.
I bought a used 2005 Rubicon in 2007 for $20K, sold it in 2013 for $20K
Bough a new Grand Cherokee in 2013 for ~$35K, traded it in Tuesday for ~$14K
They aren't even in the same ballpark on resale
