Part of an email from and Ascension Parish high school principal
quote:

"If, at any time, a student leaves class without permission it is considered skipping class. This behavior is met with a consequence of a Saturday Detention or a Suspension.

Although we, the administration, understand your desire to walk out of class in support of change to help end school shootings, we cannot allow you to break school rules and/or put yourself in a dangerous situation without supervision. Instead, we encourage you to take action on our campus by going out of your way to be kind to others. We ask you to honor the 17 lives lost in the recent Florida school shooting by doing 17 good deeds here at Dutchtown. Talk to 17 students you have never met before. Put your phones away and spend time getting to know 17 people you don't hang out with on a regular basis. Do 17 random acts of kindness. Give 17 compliments to those you see who are having a bad day. Do something here to make a difference in the lives of others.

So the rumor that the Ascension parish school district is encouraging student walkouts is squashed

Sounds like a bulletproof excuse for skipping school.

I don't remember what day we would skip out of school, but half of our school ended up at Grand Isle or Fourchon on skipout day.

Do all of the kids gather on a football field or something like someone else in here suggested?

It's always good for a chuckle when the "WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!!!" crowd loses their shite at the kiddies for defying authority.

I went to a private school. The teachers would have given something for a grade so it would have actually hurt had we walked out

We’ll have kids walk out. It’s all been student lead in our building and pretty well organized. They’ve been told as long as they return to class in a timely manner, they won’t be disciplined. There’ll likely be a handful cut class but most will just do their thing and come back in.

Honestly, it’s worse dealing with the parents losing their shite over it then the kids.

In most jobs, you would have to go out of your way to tell your boss that you would be spending 17 minutes standing in the parking garage for him to even notice.

That's the thing. No one really knows why they are walking out. Some are doing it to protest guns. Others to protest school shootings, others assault rifles, others just want to get out of class.

Our school principal made it very clear and honestly I dont have a problem with it...

quote:

As you are aware, students around the country are engaging in a national walkout on March 14th in response to the events that occurred at Stoneman Douglas. Many students at ***** have also chosen to participate. I am sharing details so that you have an understanding of how the demonstration will proceed and what measures have put in place to ensure that it is conducted safely. It is important to note that this demonstration is entirely student led and student organized. Our role as a school has been one of a partner, to ensure that our students are both supported and safe.

Over the last few weeks I have met with members of our Student Government Association (SGA), Club Officers, and other student leaders regarding their plans for the walkout. One of those meetings also included student leaders from our neighboring school, *********** Student leaders have shared that at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 14th, students will leave their classrooms and exit the building. As part of the walkout, students will line the perimeter of the school, ultimately meeting with students from ******* at the border of both campuses Students from both schools will lock arms in a show of solidarity, effectively surrounding the block and both schools.

We’ve asked students to respect those who chose not to participate, and recognize that student opinions and positions may vary. Teachers will supervise students who choose not to participate. Staff and security will be situated around the entire block. We have also hired an additional police officer to be on site during the demonstration.

If you have any questions regarding the walkout, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Wait. Why?

That's just what I've read online. That a walkout is essentially the same as an absence. If a parent is ok with their kids walking out they would raise hell if the school gave them detention.
