Just going to throw it out there, but the modern Cheongsam (name for the style of dress) is actually a 1920s/30s invention that was primarily the result of local clothiers appropriating western fashion evening dress silhouettes and combining them with more traditional Chinese styles in pre communist China, and was worn by both Chinese and European women. Post the communist revolution the Cheongsam was actually (technically) outlawed, and has only been revived in mainland China in the past couple of decades.
