People used to dress up for occasions like this.
People still do.
Others don't.
Just like it has always been.

But I thought high school graduation is meaningless and expected. It’s not a big deal

Son’s been wearing this tie to everything:

That’s hideous. Just purely gross. Detestable

Mine is thicker stripes without the logo. Its meant to represent Florida but not an official tie

I know it fits the occasion so I get it, but that’s an ugly arse tie

It’s just hs graduation. I tried not walk and my parents made me. I did not walk for college. Told them to mail me my shite.
This shouldn’t even be a big deal unless you are a first genny American.

$4k to be a journeyman HVAC/Electrician at San Jacinto CC. And there are hundreds of local jobs open immediately. Add a $150 TWIC card, and start cashing checks.
ETA: Like graduating from a MCRD, it's not much, but at least you're employable, unlike at least half of those with "higher" education degrees.

Imagine needing to say 10 “Hail Mary’s” and 5 “Our Father’s” because you wore a suit to a graduation ceremony.

Serious answer? We were a better society when we shamed people for acting like uncultured idiots. Going out in public dressed like shite let everyone know you were trash. Now, trash is accepted and that’s the problem.
100%.

The point was that "adulthood" starts after that 2 year stint at San Jac, not high school graduation.
My comment wasn't a criticism of this path, but an example of how even the blue collar/trade path typically has a temporal gap between high school graduation and starting an "adult" job. That wasn't the case in the past for many.

lol at caring about clothes other people wear!

Hell, people don’t even dress up to attend funerals anymore.
Posted on 5/19/25 at 1:21 pm to sidewalkside
It’s not just these events - I’ve been to multiple funerals this past year and the amount of people showing up to the wake in fishing shirts, work out clothes, etc… is insane. I hate getting dressed up as much as anybody but for fricks sake, have some self respect and put a button down and slacks on.

Fair or not, society judges people based on their appearance.
If you don't care enough to at least look like you have showered that day, combed your hair and put on decent clothing, then you are blasting that personal pride is non existent.
Throw in a ceremony that, in general, is a right of passage to adulthood, people should have more respect for the occasion.
But, having been to graduations each year for about the last 10 years, society is dipping to the minimal effort needed to get by.
It is really sad and remarkable at the same time.

I aint sure there aint some sort of disconnect going on here....
There is another thread about people acting a fool at graduation and it seems to be the consensus that only black folks do it while white folks behave. It seems to be the consensus, or at least a consensus is building, that only black people dress "inappropriately" to attend a high school graduation. It will have only been a few days ago and will only be a few days yet that a thread on these forums won't suggest that black folks are ant--education or otherwise bent on not getting an education or somehow the downfall of education in general. I don't think all of this is possible...if black folks are ant-education what are they doing at graduation in inappropriate attired and celebrating the completion of high school or college in a manner which is disturbing to white folks....

People don't dress up for shite anymore. I've seen them dressed like that at a funeral.
