That is the going rate for people who live in a city. Chicago cost of living is much more reasonable than SF but we sent our daughter (infant) to daycare and it was $2,100, that wasn't the cheapest, but even the "cheap" ones were $1,800. I can't speak to that family's other expenses, but childcare I believe 100%, especially in a higher demand city like SF.

I know some people in Cambridge who were paying $3,000/mo to send their kid to daycare.
They finally said screw it and moved to the suburbs when they were going to have their second kid. I gues $6,000/mo for daycare is where they drew the line.

What about the 36k in mortgage?? 3k/mo house note would give me heart palpitations.

Child care is expensive. How much less could they get away with in the suburbs?
Also, $700k is a lot of mortgage for someone with $200K income unless they can be frugal elsewhere. They need to move out to Oakland and get a $500K house.

That must also include utilities for their house, since nowhere on that budget did they list electricity, cable, water, sewer, internet, trash, etc.

Most people on here wouldnt believe how much daycare costs on the coasts because they simply dont live there. $2,000/month in daycare for one kid is extremely believable.

Factor in private school tuition, after care and summer camp and we aren't far off that number for 2 kids in freaking BR

Yeah. Same in Houston. And that's if you can get in. Half have 2 year wait lists. Several you have to get on the wait list literally as soon as you find out your pregnant if you want to have daycare for your kids. And spending anywhere from $13-$20 an hour on nanny care is common. $20 if you have twins or two young kids.
